Springfield Athletes Announce College Choices

Seven Springfield athletes announced their college choices as follows:

Kiersten McLennan – Millersville University (Soccer)
Final list of colleges: - Millersville, East Stroudsburg, West Chester, Widener
Reasons for choosing Millersville: “I really liked the campus. I did an overnight, so I got to meet all the girls – the girls were nice, and the coaches were nice. I always liked playing soccer since I was younger. My brother played soccer in college, and watching him play made me want to play also. I’m so excited.”

Alexia Tomlinson – Franklin & Marshall (Swimming)
Final list of colleges: Franklin & Marshall, Boston College, Richmond, Bentley
Reasons for choosing Franklin & Marshall: “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to swim or not, and halfway through my high school season this year I decided I wanted to, so that ruled out Richmond. I really like the program and the coach (at F&M) much more than I did at BC or Bentley, plus the academics are much more suited to what I wanted to do. The people on the team are so nice. The pool is Olympic sized and has 20 lanes. I can’t wait to swim in it every day. I’m just so excited.”

Tierney Carraba – Mount St. Mary’s University (Soccer)
Final list of colleges: Mount St. Mary’s, Monmouth, St. Joseph’s
Reasons for choosing Mount St. Mary’s: “I have always wanted to play D-1 soccer since I was little, and I started playing on different club teams and going to tournaments. That’s how you get recruited basically. I really loved the coaches at Mount St. Mary’s – they were just really friendly and nice, and I liked their attitude toward the sport and the game. That’s why I chose to go there. It’s really exciting. It’s definitely been my dream.”

Maggie Olson – Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. (Field Hockey)
Final list of colleges: Indiana, Old Dominion (Recruited by Ursinus and East Stroudsburg for lacrosse)
Reasons for choosing Indiana: “I almost went to Old Dominion. I went on my overnight to Old Dominion, and I liked a lot, but then I went to Indiana, and I liked the campus more, I liked the academic program better. It basically came down to not field hockey but more the school itself. I liked Indiana a lot better. The coach – I think we’re really on the same wave length. I met a lot of the girls, and they were very nice.
“I always thought I would play lacrosse in college because it had been my sport, but my senior season I started to love field hockey a lot more than I had before, and I realized I couldn’t not play it ever again whereas lacrosse – as much as I’ll miss it, and I definitely will because I love lacrosse, but I feel I can make more progress with my field hockey career.
“It’s D-1, and it’s the Big 10, so it’s intense. It’s basically (hockey) all day every day. As the coach describes it, we have two hours practice on the field, but everything off the field should be field hockey related. Everything you do you have to keep in mind you’re part of the team and you’re part of the program.”

Sarah Studdiford – East Stroudsburg University (Lacrosse)
Final list of colleges: East Stroudsburg, Franklin & Marshall, Bloomsburg
Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg: “I went to a clinic in the fall, and I really like it. I committed in November. I liked the coach, and I wanted to go to a state school, and I really liked the way she handled her program.”

Ali Roy – Sacred Heart University (Field Hockey)
Final list of colleges: Sacred Heart, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, Bloomsburg
Reasons for choosing Sacred Heart: “I loved the campus. It was small but big enough for me. Everything was so nice. The girls on the team were nice, and I really liked the coach.”
