Springfield Finishes 8th at PIAA Class AA Meet

LEWISBURG - Springfield finished strong at this year’s PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships, which ended Thursday at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Tyler Chamberlin was the top finisher for the Spartans. He earned a silver medal in the 100-yard breaststroke with his time of 57.63.

“I’m speechless,” Chamberlin said. “I was just feeling it. I had my eyes on the school record and I broke it. It’s a great way to end my senior year. It was my last swim and I’m glad I went out like that.”

Teammate Danny Giampietro was fifth in the 500 freestyle, also setting a school record (4:44.36). He was seeded seventh after the preliminaries.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I wanted the school record. I didn’t get it by much but I got it.”

Jake Corcoran, Ben Van Meter, Wyatt Ford and Giampietro were in the consolation final of the 400 freestyle relay, finishing 12th (3:19.74).

Ford stepped in for Chamberlin, who swam in the preliminaries.

“Our team had hopes of getting all-state in that event and they wanted me to be focusing on the 100 breaststroke,” Chamberlin said. “We knew the other guy, Wyatt Ford, was truly faster than me so we put him in and they did a great time.

“Everyone on our team swam their hearts out. It was a great meet for us.”

The Spartans finished eighth in team scoring with 80 points. Quaker Valley won the boys team title (174).

For the Springfield girls, Margrethe Leis, Carly Munger, Alyssa Lorusso and Lizzie Nadolski won the consolation final to take ninth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.03).

Leis was also 25th in the 500 freestyle (5:23.73).

Upper Moreland’s Dan Wilcox earned his first state medal, taking seventh in diving with a score of 398.80 points.

“I don’t have the words to say how I feel,” he said. “I’m so happy. I felt good coming into it, that this was my year. This year was different; I knew this was my year to get a medal.

“I can’t think of a better way to end my high school career than with this. This is what I wanted and what I worked so hard for.”

Teammate Dylan Walker also made the finals, finishing 16th (326.85).

Upper Moreland had four state qualifiers, all divers. Shannon Chambers and Colleen Rodrigues competed on Wednesday.

“I had my whole team here cheering for me,” Wilcox said.
