Springfield Swimming Starts Strong

LEWISBURG - Springfield had a good showing in Wednesday’s first day of competition at the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships, held at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Senior Danny Giampietro finished eighth in the 200-yardfreestyle in 1:45.91.

“That was my goal, to win a medal,” he said.

Last year Giampietro had the eighth fastest time in the event but finished ninth overall because his preliminary swim did not get him into the medal heat.

“That really made me want to come back here this year and get one,” he said. “I knew I could do it.

“I’m also really happy for our medley relay. For them to get a medal is great.”

The 200 medley relay of Jake Corcoran, Tyler Chamberlin, Ben Wiley and Wyatt Ford finished fifth (1:39.61).

Chamberlin finished 18th in the 200 individual medley (2:01.88).

Corcoran, Giampietro, Wiley and Ford were disqualified in the preliminaries of the 200 freestyle relay.

“That was disappointing but it’s a lesson learned,” Giampietro said. “We’re back in the 400 freestyle relay and we won’t make that mistake again.”

The Spartans are 14th in team scoring with 39 points. Bloomsburg is leading the competition with 106.

The Springfield girls team also fared well.

Lizzie Nadolski was eighth in the 50 freestyle (24.83).

Margrethe Leis of Springfield finished 24th in the 200 freestyle (1:59.90).

The 200 freestyle relay of Megan Leibfreid, Leis, Alyssa Lorusso and Nadolski finished 10th (1:41.43).
