On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, Quakertown senior Lauren Starzecky signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Gwynedd-Mercy College.

Reasons for choosing Gwynedd-Mercy: “Definitely how close it was to home. I love how my family will be able to come to all my games – ever since I was little they’ve been coming to all my games, and that just really appealed to me. A lot of the girls on the team are from this area, and I really liked that a lot. It made me feel comfortable being there. They have a new communications major, and I’m excited about that.”
What was the progression that led you to play collegiate basketball? “I’ve been playing AAU basketball since eighth grade, and I would go to tournaments and hear about people going to college to play basketball. I always wanted to play in college, but I never really thought about it too much until I got to high school. Then I started going to the shootouts and showcases, and I started getting phone calls and letters. That’s when it all became real. I’m very excited.”
Coach Greg Swavely says: “She’s had a great four-year career for us. This year she led us in just about every category – points, rebounds, you name it. We’re going to miss her, but I’m extremely happy for her. Gwynedd-Mercy is a great choice for her, and she’ll do well.
“Lauren worked so hard on her game to improve her weaknesses. It wasn’t just scoring points this year, it was leadership because there were times when we struggled as a team, and she was a calming force. Due to her leadership and experience, it kept some of our younger players calm and kept them from getting too high or too low, depending on where we were in the season. She’s not only a great basketball player, but she’s a great person to have on the team and have in the locker room. We’re going to miss her presence next year big time.”
