On Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, Plymouth Whitemarsh senior John Staudenmayer was recognized at a special signing ceremony. The PW senior has signed a letter of intent to accept a wrestling scholarship to the University of North Carolina.
John Staudenmayer – University of North Carolina (Wrestling)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: UNC, Bucknell, Virginia, Princeton, Lehigh
Reasons for choosing UNC: “The coaches were very consistent, I know a lot of kids who are already down there and just the atmosphere in general. They contacted me after my sophomore year at states, and ever since then, I was in love with the school. I didn’t think it was feasible until they contacted me.
“It’s amazing. I reached a goal.”
What was the recruiting process like for you? “Colleges started contacting me my sophomore year. That’s when I started getting e-mails, and I really tried to follow up as much as I could.
“It was difficult. You don’t like telling people, ‘No.’ There were some schools that are very good at wrestling but just were not a fit for me. It was tough from the fact that you have to reject people.”
Coach Nate Wachter says: “John is very dedicated. He’s always in the weight room, and he’s always going to other clubs trying to find the best guys he can wrestle. That ultimately makes him the best wrestler he can be, but he’s also a great kid. His family did an amazing job raising him. He’s very respectful and easy to coach.
“On the mat, he’s very, very technical and very strong as well, which accounts for him being in the weight room a lot. He has great head position, stance and movement, and he’s very physical with great conditioning as well. He enjoys beating people up, and on top, I think he’s probably one of the best wrestlers in the state.”
