Sterling Limousine and Transportation Services of Wrightstown is proud to recognize the Players of the Game for SOL teams that are part of each week’s SuburbanOneSports.com’s Featured Games.
UPPER DUBLIN at PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH (PW 23, Upper Dublin 7)
Sterling Limousine Offensive Players of the Game – Russhon Phillips & Xavier Ellington, PW
Phillips, PW’s senior quarterback, rushed for 126 yards on 11 carries. He had TD runs of 60 and five yards and also completed 5-of-7 passes for 70 yards. Ellington had 18 carries for 113 yards, which included a touchdown run of 43 yards. He also had one reception for 10 yards.
PW coach Dan Chang says: “Both of these guys are just extremely gifted athletes, and they’re both very smart on the football field. It’s a luxury having two weapons like that. It’s tough for defenses to try and stop both of them when we have two dynamic parts like that. These guys have been in the weight room all summer, and the leaps and bounds they have grown as football players has been tremendous. Their work ethic is incredible, and their attitude is great.
“Russhon is the brains of our offense. He made some great reads in terms of our run game and ran the ball hard and tough and had some big plays. Xavier – every time we give him the ball you hold your breath because you don’t know if he will go all the way. He had some spectacular plays – there was one play when he broke five tackles. It was just an incredible run, and having that twosome opens up our playbook a lot.”
Sterling Limousine Defensive Players of the Game – Kavon Johnson & Mike Martina
Johnson – a defensive end – and Martina – who plays defensive tackle – anchored a defensive line that controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting the Flying Cardinals to just 52 yards on the ground. Upper Dublin managed just 146 yards of total offense after a 75-yard scoring drive put them on top 7-0.
PW coach Dan Chang says: “Coming into this week, we stressed the importance of stopping their running game because I think the pass game feeds off of their run. Those two guys were huge in taking up blocks, making their reads and making plays when they were supposed to. A guy like Kavon takes up two or three blockers at a time, and that frees up our linebackers to make plays. Mike is a guy who came on rather late for us this year. We didn’t really put him in there until the Abington game. All through camp he was really a non-factor on defense, and he’s just been such a solid player for us at defensive end since then. Friday night he made play after play. When guys were running right at him, he would do a great job, and when guys ran away from him, he would be doing his responsibility.”
Sterling Limousine Special Teams Player of the Game – Matt Goldberg, PW
The Colonials’ junior punter averaged 36 yards on three punts and played an important role in terms of field position.
PW coach Dan Chang says: “This is his first year ever playing football. He was a soccer player before, and this was actually the first game that he started as our punter, and he did a great job. He got the ball off quickly, and he had some monster punts, and that was huge in terms of field position for us.”
QUAKERTOWN at CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH (CB South 37, Quakertown 13)
Sterling Limousine Offensive Player of the Game – Matt Johns, Central Bucks South
The Titans’ senior quarterback completed 9-of-13 passes for 226 yards. He also had five carries for 46 yards and one touchdown.
CB South coach Dave Rackovan says: “Matt had an unbelievable game. He was the difference maker. He had the big pass that put us in position right before halftime to go up. He just made some huge plays in the passing game. The biggest difference this year is that Dan Brown has taken the pressure off of Matt. Last year, we threw the ball a lot more because we didn’t have the same type of athlete at running back. We try to achieve balance, and on Friday night, we were almost 50-50 in yards rushing and yards receiving. It was a great combination that way.”
Sterling Limousine Defensive Player of the Game – Steve Veal, Central Bucks South
The Titans’ senior free safety was a force on defense, delivering nine tackles and breaking up a pass on a night that saw the Panthers accumulate just 142 yards of total offense.
CB South coach Dave Rackovan says: “He’s our quarterback on defense. He makes a lot of plays, he gets us in the right position, and he’s a playmaker. He’s a very smart kid, and he understands the intricacies of the defense. I also think he’s very instinctual being able to recognize run, pass and all the various issues a free safety has to deal with.”
Sterling Limousine Special Teams Player of the Game – Evan Stahl, Central Bucks South
The Titans’ placekicker was 4-for-5 in extra points and also booted a 22-yard field goal in Friday night’s win.
CB South coach Dave Rackovan says: “He’s a first-year kicker – never played football before, and his statistics are amazing. On Friday night, he kicked a difficult field goal from the left hash, and he was 4-of-5 on extra points – the one he missed wasn’t his fault. His kickoffs are really good, and he punts the ball for us. He’s done a great job for us all year, and he came up big on Friday night.”
