Central Bucks West’s senior night game against the William Tennent Panthers did not go as the Bucks had hoped as they fell 6-4, but it was, however, an exciting nailbiter.
West was celebrating the high school ice hockey careers of five seniors, with Jimmy Schwender scoring the first goal of the night for the Bucks.
The other seniors were Mike Germann, Seamus Mclaughlin and Jeremy Goral as well as Ryan Leven, who was unable to play due to a broken arm.
The game was very back and forth. Tennent was the first to strike early in the first period but West tied it up shortly after. At the end of the first period, the Panthers were up 3-1.
West once again reminded Tennent that they were not going to be taken lightly and tied it at apiece in the second period. The play of the two teams was fast, and the players were up and down the ice.
William Tennent took control of the third period going ahead by two goals again to make it 5-3. Both teams had picked up their physical play, and penalties started being swapped.
With about two minutes left in game, West had a two-man advantage and head coach Dave Baun took a time out.
“Our coach just kept telling us to put pucks on net,” senior forward Schwender said, “just keep putting them on net.”
The Bucks scored to make it 5-4 with a little over a minute left. Due to penalty calls, West continued with the man advantage. Time, however, expired on the five-on-three before West could pull their goalie.
Tennent iced their victory on an empty net goal with only a few seconds left.
“I think our team played very well. We just let a couple goals get through that we shouldn’t,” Schwender said of his team’s efforts.
Next up for West is North Penn February 4, at Hatfield at 7:20 pm. For William Tennent, the Panthers face Central Bucks South Feb. 9, at 6:50 pm, at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center.
