DOYLESTOWN - It was the last night of September, not the Fourth of July.

But the fans that turned out at War Memorial Field on Friday night were treated to quite a fireworks display.

Central Bucks South exploded for 45 first-half points in a 45-14 drubbing of Central Bucks West in a Suburban One League Continental Conference football game.

It was Dan Brown who led the assault. The senior running back scored on runs of 59, 26 and 6 yards and added a fourth score on an 88-yard kickoff return. He finished with 159 rushing yards in just one half of work.

Quarterback Matt Johns was hardly inconspicuous, directing the offense effectively as usual, and scoring on runs of 26 and 21 yards. But on this night, the Titans (3-2 overall, 1-1 SOL), did most of their damage on the ground.

"When you come out against good teams, you can't be one-dimensional," said South coach Dave Rackovan. "Tonight, when we came out, we were going to gave balance. And I think in the first half, we did that."

The opening minutes of the first quarter turned into a shootout.

Johns took his team to the end zone on the game's first drive, covering the last 26 yards himself.

Cody Riemenschneider returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for the Bucks (2-3, 0-2 SOL) to tie the game at 7.

Seconds later, Brown returned the favor, taking the Bucks' kickoff 88 yards to give the Titans a 14-7 lead, with the game just 2 minutes, 5 seconds old.

The Titans assumed control after that, by dominating the line of scrimmage. Brown had an abundance of running lanes in which to roam.

"We had to set the tempo," said Jin Lee, the Titans' senior left tackle. "When we set the tempo, everything goes our way. It's huge for us."

"We finally established our running game," Brown said. "Last year, we were predominantly a passing team, but when we have balance like this, it's easy to put things together."

Brown's 59-yard gallop made it 21-7 before Evan Stahl's 25-yard field goal increased the lead to 24-7 after one period.

Brown added two additional touchdowns in the second quarter and Johns one.

West's only response was Sherrod Higginbotham's 76-yard touchdown sprint with 3:20 left until halftime.

The second half was scoreless, although the Titans' Bobby Mallon had an apparent 40-yard touchdown run at the start of the fourth quarter wiped out by an inadvertent whistle.

Emotions ran high between the intra-district rivals, and tempers boiled over on a few occasions.

It was a frustrating evening for a young herd of Bucks.

"That's a very good offense," West coach Brian Hensel said of the Titans. "Every one of their receivers is a threat. Danny Brown can run the ball and catch the ball, and Matt Johns knows how to distribute the ball well.

"They did some right things and we had a lot of breakdowns tonight. But give them credit; they put us in situations that allowed us to break down."
