WARMINSTER – Both host Central Bucks South and Abington were searching for a little ‘Mo’ in a non-league game between the two Suburban One League teams.

Both were coming off Tuesday night conference wins – South a 68-63 overtime victory over Pennridge – and Abington a 50-38 winner over William Tennent. And it was the Titans (3-3, 1-1) who found the ‘Mo’ in a rare Wednesday afternoon matinee contest, defeating the Ghosts (2-4, 1-1), 43-30.

“We really wanted this game badly,” said Central Bucks South senior Mike Pincus who led all scorers with 18 points. “We have a tough league schedule ahead of us, and we to win as many games as possible and get some momentum.

“We have a very inexperienced team, and a game like this gives us a chance to play together,” added Pincus. “We want to be able to play and have fun – and it’s no fun losing.”

The pained look on Abington head coach Tony Hall’s face moments after the game proved the Pincus point.

“We came in here to play a basketball game, and we didn’t play at all,” said Hall. “To score 15 points after three quarters is a disgrace. I’m ashamed of how we played today.”

Abington had defeated William Tennent less than 24 hours earlier as Jaymes Miller torched the Panthers with a 27-point effort.

But Miller was stymied by a swarming South defense and did not score his first points until there were 58 seconds left in the third period. The talented Ghost center/forward would finish with just five points.

“Our goal is to get back to districts and defend our (Suburban One League Continental) conference championship,” said CB South head coach Jason Campbell. “We had a nice team effort today. We ran our offense – Mike had the hot hand – and we did a great job of setting screens and getting him the open shot.”

The game got off to a tedious start as neither team could put points on the board. In fact, with two minutes left in the first period the Titans led the Ghosts – ugh – 3-1.

A flurry of CB South points in the final two minutes – which included baskets by Sean Kummer, Matt Johns, and Pincus – along with a 3-pointer by Joey Maher – stretched the lead to 12-1 at the close of the quarter.

The first Abington field goal came at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter when Mike Piunti banged home a 3-pointer. The teams traded points for the remainder of the period and the score was – ugh – 22-11 at the half.

CB South expanded the lead to 35-15 by the close of the third period to take control of the game. Five different players scored points for the Titans in that period – Pincus, Kummer, Johns, Justin Policane, and Dan Brown.

Abington doubled its point production in the fourth period as the Ghosts outscored the Titans 15-8 in the stanza. Some fullcourt pressure defense created some turnovers, and Jeff Rowley played well for Abington in the final period.

“We made the run at the end, but that doesn’t mean much when you play the way we played the first three quarters,” said Hall. “A game like this really hurts.”

Like Mike Pincus said, “You play to have fun, and it’s no fun losing.”
