Harry S Truman defended its title in Univest’s Caring for Sports giveaway. Last Thursday, Truman honored Univest during a memorable check presentation/pep rally.
School spirit is alive and well at Harry S Truman High School.
Last year, Truman was the come-from-behind winner in Univest’s Caring for Sports giveaway, and Univest’s officers were so impressed by the school’s response at the check presentation rally, they decided to waive its rule that there could not be repeat winners.
Truman responded by defending its title and actually topped last year’s rally this time around with its student body – as a way of expressing appreciation - spelling out Univest in the stands.
Representing Univest at the presentation was Kim Detwiler, Senior Vice President, Director of Corporate Communications.
“This is the most exciting and surprising welcome that we receive when we present a check for $1,000,” Detwiler said. “It really is phenomenal. We couldn’t script it better. They honored us in an incredible way.”
In addition to presenting a check for $1,000 to the school’s athletic department, Univest gave foam number one fingers to the entire student body and also presented a custom-made banner to the school.
“We did it again – for the second year in a row,” athletic director Mike Stock told the student body. “Once again, you guys were given a mission, a very important mission, a very tough mission, and you rose to the occasion like the Truman Tigers you are.”
When the rally was over, Truman students spoke about the significance of winning the contest.
“It’s really nice to have our school unite, especially with Univest doing this – it’s awesome,” said Chris Mangold, noting that there are a lot of misconceptions about Truman. “When you first get here, you hear these rumors and bad talk about Truman, but it’s a great place. I love going to school here. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“It’s awesome to see the student body come together and do something like this. It’s great.”
“All of our students are really involved – everybody goes all out,” senior Madison Piasecki said. “I don’t know – we have a lot of school pride.
“I love these yellow foam fingers, I loved seeing everybody out there waving them around in the wind, screaming and rooting for the team. This was awesome. I’m glad Univest was here. It was a good time.”
“It was awesome to see the student body come together to win this contest,” Jasmyn Wilson said. “There’s a perception about Truman that just isn’t true. I love to see the student body and come together and win a contest like this.
“It’s awesome that Univest offers this. It helps everything at Truman. The whole school is thankful to Univest.”
For Univest, giving back to the community isn’t just lip service.
“This is one of the ways Univest gives back to our community and really support education,” Detwiler said. “There’s such a great need for public education to be funded and to be supported by businesses in the local community, and this is one of the ways we do that.
“It’s really great because it’s one that connects the students with Univest and with each other and really helps them show their pride. It’s really all about them and what they bring to the table that enables them to win.rdquo;
