Sarah Tustin – Vanderbilt University (Lacrosse)
Major: Undeclared freshman year but leaning toward a political science major
Final college list: Vanderbilt, Cornell, Yale, Notre Dame
Reasons for selecting Vanderbilt: “I liked the area, and I stayed over for a weekend in February and met the team and interacted with them, and that kind of pushed me over the edge. I fell in love with the school – it was beautiful, and Nashville is an awesome city. I don’t think any of the other colleges could really offer a city, and I’ve always been a city girl.
“I was really happy with the choice because I didn’t really want to go to an Ivy League school after I visited them because I like sports. Vanderbilt is in the SEC. I love having that feeling of spirit, and I also wanted a really good academic school. Vanderbilt is literally a perfect fit. I couldn’t have asked for a better school. It was my number one choice since December, so it kind of worked out.”
Since you’ll be going to school in Nashville, are you a fan of country music? “It’s not that I didn’t like country before, but once I knew I was going to Vanderbilt, I was like ‘I should probably start listening to country.’ I listen to it all the time, and I love it. I actually love it.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate lacrosse become a reality? “Actually, I’ve always wanted to since eighth grade. It was between lacrosse and field hockey. I liked field hockey a lot more back then, but I stopped playing indoor (hockey) my sophomore year because I knew lacrosse was my love over field hockey.
“In seventh grade, I started playing with Phantastix, and I started going to all these camps in the summer like UNC and Duke. If I’m going to put all that commitment into playing a sport, I might as well play Division One.”
How does it feel now that it you’ve signed your letter of intent? “It’s an amazing feeling. Everyone is stressing about college now. I stressed over this my freshman and sophomore years, going to every tournament, every camp. There’s so much pressure, and now it’s such a great feeling just thinking it’s over with.”
Coach Marie Schmucker says: “She’s a very skilled, a very smart player. She’s basically a coach’s dream. She goes above and beyond what you ask her to do for you. She’s an offensive player, but we asked her to take the center draws, and nothing is ever a problem for her. She’s a very flexible player.
“She plays two sports – field hockey and lacrosse, and she was our most outstanding defensive player and all-league in field hockey. She plays from her heart and will give you everything she has. She’s a role model, and she leads by example. The kids really look up to Sarah.
“She’s an all-around student-athlete. She’s down to earth and dedicated. She’s the total package, and she’s just a super, super kid. I think she’s going to be a big asset to Vanderbilt.”
