Upper Dublin junior midfielder Kelly Cross has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Syracuse University.
Cross was a First Team Suburban One American Conference choice last year for the Cardinals (18-1), who won the league title with a perfect 14-0 record and advanced to the second round of the District 1 tournament. Cross, who plays club lacrosse for the Phantastix, collected 54 goals and 63 assists last spring and also played on the Philly 1 team at the National Tournament in May.
Upper Dublin junior Kelly Cross has committed to Syracuse
At Syracuse, Cross will join older sister Amy, an All-American midfielder last year at Upper Dublin who is now an Orange freshman.
Kelly Cross attended Syracuse camps this summer and said she liked the campus and program as well as the highly-regarded communications school. She also said the presence of her sister made Syracuse a perfect fit.
“I went to camp there twice this summer and I was able to meet the entire incoming 2010 freshman class and the Class of 2011 seniors,” she said. “I immediately fell in love with the girls, the campus, and the coaches.
“I would say definitely that having Amy there put Syracuse ahead of the other schools. I loved playing with her in high school more than anything. To be able to play with her again makes me very happy.”
Syracuse, coached by former Philadelphia Wing and pro legend Gary Gait, went 15-7 in 2010 and reached the NCAA semifinals.
Cross not only has had the luxury of playing with her sister, she’s enjoyed playing for her mother, Dee Cross, the Cards’ head coach the past four years. Under Cross, a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Cards have won the past three league titles with undefeated marks.
“I have loved every minute of it (playing for my mother),” said Cross. “It can be awkward at times, but we definitely do our best to keep lacrosse things on the field and home things at home and not cross boundaries.
“I would not give it up for anything.”
