On Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, Upper Dublin senior Erin Lafferty was recognized at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play soccer at Temple University.
Erin Lafferty – Temple University (Soccer)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Temple, Virginia Tech, Connecticut, Rutgers
Reasons for choosing Temple: “I really liked the coach. I had met him when he coached at Virginia Tech, and after he went to Temple, he contacted me. The girls were all really nice. I like the environment there and being in the city.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “I definitely always knew I wanted to play soccer in college. It started really early for me. We started doing college showcase tournaments my sophomore year, and I committed March of my junior year.”
Coach John Topper says: “Erin is phenomenal athletically. The time she’s put in over the last 12-14 years playing soccer – her instincts are just phenomenal. Defensively, her timing is unlike any other high school player I’ve seen. She’s absolutely dominant in the air, she never panics, and she really is just a rock back there. One word is consistency. I could count on one hand the number of mistakes I’ve seen her make in four years. She came in as a freshman like that and only got better.
“We tried her in the midfield, and we had an injury and put her in at center back, and we could never afford to take her out of there. She organized everyone around her. She was a vocal leader ever since she stepped on the field and only grew from there. She’s consistent and efficient. If you know the game and watch the way she plays, she keeps the game in front of her, keeps it simple, organizes everyone and is just really a great field leader.”
