Alex Wheatley is the definition of a scholar-athlete. The Council Rock South senior earned AP All-State honors in basketball in each of the last two years while rewriting the record books at South. Off the court, she is a National Merit Scholar, the vice president of National Honor Society and is ranked in the top 10 percent of her class with a 4.422 GPA. This despite a course load that includes five AP classes this year. Wheatley also is president of the Environmental Action Club and was the flute section leader in the concert band. In other words, Wheatley does it all, and she does it all extremely well. “Coaching Alex was a great experience,” coach Monica Stolic said. “You would think kids like her who were first team all-state as a junior would be cocky. I never saw her disrespect anyone – an opponent, a referee, a coach. She was just so easygoing. I never saw her rattled.”

Wheatley closed out her career with records for most points (1,771), most rebounds (1,288), most assists (464), most steals (343) and most free throws made (299). During her four-year varsity career, Wheatley led the Golden Hawks to new heights. This year they captured the school’s first ever National Conference crown and advanced to the state quarterfinals. “She was averaging a double-double, but she was always – I need to get better,” Stolic said. “She made everybody on the floor a better player. She did it all, and it came natural to her.”

Wheatley also excelled in track, finishing third in the high jump in the SOL National Conference Championships and competing with the 4x800 relay at districts.

Wheatley will write the next chapter of her life at Princeton University where she will play basketball and major in biology.

Gabe Clemmer’s willingness to make personal sacrifices for the good of the team helped lead the Souderton volleyball team to new heights. Clemmer was projected to be the team’s starting outside hitter, but when coach Brad Garrett needed someone to fill in at setter, Clemmer answered the call. He excelled, and the job was his for the remainder of the season. With Clemmer running the team’s offense, the Indians returned to the district final for the first time since 2007. “Gabe really sacrificed his personal goals for the benefit of the team,” Garrett said. “He’s one of our best outside hitter, but when we knew we were going to lose our setter for a little bit, he was willing to step in, and he’s really grown into that role. He doesn’t get the publicity that the big outside hitters get, but he puts the team before himself, and that shows what kind of kid he is.”

In addition to his prowess on the court, Clemmer serves another vital role for the team – as a calm, cool and collected force to counter some of the more excitable personalities on the team. “We have a lot of personalities on this team, and one of our big things this year was getting all those personalities to fit together,” Garrett said. “Gabe’s been a big part of the glue that keeps us together.” That’s a testament to Clemmer’s ability to fit in since he doesn’t share his school days with his teammates. Clemmer is homeschooled, but he found it easy to be accepted as part of the team.

Clemmer is uncertain where he wants to go with his life, but he will take his time deciding. “I’m going to take a year off,” he said. “I really don’t know what I want to do. I don’t want to go to college and not know what I want to do.”
