Univest Featured Athletes (Week 11)

The awards, sponsored by Univest, are given to seniors of good character who are students in good standing that have made significant contributions to their teams. Selections are based on nominations received from coaches, athletic directors and administrators.

Kirsten Doherty is a rare three-sport standout. The William Tennent senior was a captain and co-MVP of her field hockey team this fall. A four-year starter, she anchored the Panthers’ defense in goal. “If I could have 11 Kirstens on the field and have that motivation just to always strive to do better – you can teach girls how to drive a ball, you can teach girls how to do a dodge, but not everybody has that motivation that comes from within,” Tennent hockey coach Kate Wyatt said. “She definitely does.”
In the spring, Doherty will be a three-year varsity starter for the softball team, anchoring the infield at shortstop, but until then, she will be wrestling with her high school team. She has been part of the wrestling squad since she was a sophomore. “I was friends with people on the wrestling team, and they said, ‘You would never survive. You couldn’t do it,’” Doherty said. “I was like, ‘Oh, really?’ One day I decided I was going to do it, and I did it.” Last spring, Doherty finished second in the U.S. Girls’ Wrestling Association state competition in her weight class.
Doherty hopes to continue either her hockey or softball careers at the collegiate level, and her top three college choices are Temple, Lock Haven and West Chester. Doherty is deciding between sports administration or psychology major.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Nov. 15, 2010)
Joe Stolfi was the captain of this fall’s football squad, and the Souderton senior is also captain of his wrestling squad. In an era of specialization, it is rare to find an athlete who is the cornerstone of two programs. Stolfi is one of those rare and special athletes. “There were moments when I was worried he would specialize because that seems to be the practice,” Souderton football coach Ed Gallagher said. “He’s one of the top two, three or four football players on our team, and he’s the top wrestler on the team. The same mentality he takes into a wrestling match he takes onto the field. He attacks every play with the same type of intensity that has led him to success in wrestling. It would have been a shame if he was only playing one sport.”
It is on the wrestling mat that Stolfi has left his legacy. Last year he finished fourth in the state, and he has the singular goal to win the state championship this season. His coach believes it’s a realistic goal. “He’s always a hard worker,” wrestling coach Stan Smith said. “He’s a leader as well, and he will get the other kids to tow the line and get them excited.”
An excellent student, Stolfi has signed a letter of intent to take his wrestling talents to Bucknell where he plans to major in engineering.
