Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Female Athlete (Week of Dec. 28, 2010)
Kelly Hackenbrack is a senior captain of Plymouth Whitemarsh’s basketball team. She also was captain of last fall’s soccer team that earned a berth in the district tournament for the first time in school history. “She always put the team first,” soccer coach Stephen Slack said. “She understood and had knowledge about the game with transferred onto the soccer field to her benefit. It was a delight to coach Kelly.”
In addition to being a leader of the Colonials’ basketball team, Hackenbrack – according to her coach – is a student-athlete of high character. “When I think of character, very few people surpass Kelly,” coach Becky Duffy said. “She is one of the most cognizant, conscientious and hard-working people I know.” Hackenbrack – a natural two or three guard – has stepped into the role of point guard this season. “She’s sort of an unsung hero for us,” Duffy said. “She’s not scoring a ton of points a game, but she’s such a hard worker, and she’s really humble. She doesn’t ever look for credit.”
A member of the National Honor Society, Hackenbrack carries that same work ethic into the classroom where she boasts a 3.82 GPA (4.44 weighted GPA). She has been accepted into Penn State (main campus) but has not made her final decision. She is interested in pursuing a major involving government/politics and acknowledges she has always been fascinated with journalism and current events.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Dec. 28, 2010)
Steve Schneider, the leading scorer of Central Bucks South’s basketball team, possesses unmatched intensity and desire on the hardwood. He can shoot from the outside or drive to the basket. He can pull down rebounds, dish out assists and do anything else asked of him in order to make his team succeed, but what impresses his coach the most is the way Schneider has dealt with setbacks. “What really makes Steve special is his resilience and being able to handle adversity,” coach Jason Campbell said.
The summer before his sophomore season, Schneider sustained two concussions in a week’s time and was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. He was out of school for nine months. “I had tutors coming to my house because I couldn’t go through a whole day of school without getting severe headaches,” he said. “It wasn’t until nine-and-a-half months before I started to feel myself again.”
Schneider missed his entire sophomore season, but the moment he received clearance to play, he was back in the gym every single day. As a junior, Schneider was in the Titans’ starting lineup. “He basically went from ninth grade, playing in middle school basketball to starting for us last year,” Campbell said.
This year, Schneider, a co-captain, is the lone returning starter, and he has taken on the role of leader. “Steve is someone I can rely on as almost another coach,” Campbell said. “He practices the hardest, he really does all the things we ask him to do, and he doesn’t hesitate to do any of it. He keeps things positive – whether we’re winning or losing – and people draw off of that.”
