Julie Harvey is an intimidating presence on the volleyball court. An all-league, all-district and all-state middle hitter, the Hatboro-Horsham senior slammed downed 294 kills in 67 games this season, averaging 4.39 kills a game. “One-woman wrecking crew is how someone best described her,” coach Kathy Tanner said. “If you knew Julie Harvey only off the court, you would never know this poised, intelligent and humble young woman would be capable of such a task. She’s every coach’s dream.”
Despite her immense talent, Harvey always took time to help others. “What I really thought was great was how freshmen were just as important to her as seniors,” Tanner said. “She genuinely had an interest in them. They love that she’s very approachable and caring.”
An honors student, Harvey also excels in the classroom. She boasts a weighted GPA of 5.4993 (or a simple GPA of 3.85). “Julie Harvey is a bright, intelligent young lady who exemplifies the finest qualities of our youth,” said Jackie Anderson, Harvey’s chemistry teacher. “Several of Julie’s strongest attributes are her enthusiasm and work ethic.”
Harvey has not decided on a college, but she hopes to continue her volleyball career and is planning a major in the math/science area.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Dec. 7, 2010)
Matt Donovan was a captain of North Penn’s league and district championship football team this fall. He began the year as a one-way player on the Knights’ offensive line, but when one of the team’s linebackers went down with an injury, coach Dick Beck asked Donovan in to fill the spot. He was a two-way player the remainder of the season and was part of a linebacking corps that was the heart and soul of the Knights’ vaunted defense. “He went into linebacker and has just been fantastic,” Beck said.
A three-year varsity player, Donovan made the Knights a better team just by being in the lineup. “I kept being told by Eddie Hawkins, one of his junior high teachers, what a great kid he was,” Beck said. “Everybody was a little skeptical because he’s not the biggest kid, not the fastest kid and not the strongest kid. To be perfectly honest, we just couldn’t keep him off the field. He played so many positions, and he played them all well, and he was always productive when he played.”
Donovan, who also plays baseball, was held in high regard by his teammates and classmates alike. “He’s friends with everybody,” Beck said of North Penn’s Homecoming King. “He’s a great kid. He’s a positive influence. Everybody likes Matt and deservedly so.”
A member of the National Honor Society, Donovan, who takes several AP classes, is ranked in the top five percent of his class, and he also is a member of the Class of 2011 student cabinet. He hopes to continue his athletic career at the collegiate level and is considering an economics major. He has already been accepted by Penn State but is keeping his options open.
