SuburbanOneSports.com recognizes a male and featured athlete each week. The awards, sponsored by Univest, are given to seniors of good character who are students in good standing that have made significant contributions to their teams. Selections are based on nominations received from coaches, athletic directors and administrators.
Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Female Athlete (Week of Oct. 25, 2010)
Christina Geating was a senior captain and a positive leader of an Abington field hockey team that took giant strides this season. A three-year varsity player, Geating contributed in the midfield and on the forward line. “Christina always gives 100 percent effort,” coach Amanda Deering said. “She was always one of the hardest working individuals, and it’s basically what she does in all aspects of her life.” Geating lives by a simply philosophy. “I think if you’re going to do something – don’t just do it halfheartedly,” she said. “If I’m going to put a lot of time into something, I might as well do the best I can, or I’m just wasting my time. With everything I do, I just try and push myself as hard as I can and then when I rest, I rest well.”The Abington senior also excelled in track and competes in pole vault, triple jump and occasionally long jump. Last year, she was the team’s jumping MVP.
A member of the National Honor Society and National Arts Society, Geating is enrolled in AP and honors classes and is ranked near the top of her class. She plans to continue her track career at the collegiate level. Her top college choices are the Naval Academy and Calvin College.

Tony Checchia is called a ‘program kid’ by Council Rock South football coach Vince Bedesem. “He’s always been a kid that has been very instrumental in the program itself,” Bedesem said. “He leads by example. He never misses practice. He has just been a kid that you could always rely on. He’s somebody that really has it all together and has it figured out at a young age. He’s a great, great lesson and great model to look upon as far as what it means to be a South football player and a South student.” Checchica is not only a mainstay on a South football team that is fighting to win a share of the National Conference title, he recently earned the distinction of being named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. He takes a full course load of AP and honors classes. A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, Checcia is ranked 15th in his senior class of 515 and scored a dazzling 2150 on his SATs.
Checchia hopes to continue his football career at the collegiate level, and he is looking for a school that would allow him to play football while also getting a top flight education. He is considering – among others – Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania.
