Meredith Lavin was captain of her Central Bucks East lacrosse team as both a junior and senior. “She led by example, and she’s a leader on and off the field,” coach Megan Macauley said. “She never has a bad thing to say about anyone. Meredith is a great role model. She always gives 110 percent, and she’s an absolutely terrific person.” Lavin earned first ream all league honors in each of the last two seasons, and she was her team’s leader in goals and assists. She also was the recipient of the Most Valuable Offensive Player award for the 2010 season. “She’s extremely poised,” Macauley said. “She’s got great shot placement, and her stick skills are phenomenal.”
Lavin’s resume off the lacrosse field is equally impressive. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. An honors student who carried a rigorous course load of advanced placement classes, Lavin boasted a 4.22 cumulative grade point average.
This fall, Lavin will attend Washington and Lee where she plans to major in biology with plans to attend medical school or possibly pursue grad school and work in research-based biology. She also plans to play lacrosse for the Division III power.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of June 14)
Brandon Costa was sidelined his entire junior baseball season with a torn labrum, but the North Penn senior returned this year and won the starting third base job. “Coming into the year, we really didn’t have many expectations of him,” coach Bob McCreary said. “He was going to be on the varsity because he’s the kind of kid you want to keep around, but in terms of playing, we didn’t think he was going to be capable of playing.” Then McCreary saw the former catcher field ground balls at third base during the first day of tryouts. “We really had a question mark at third base,” the Knights’ coach said. “After the first two or three ground balls, it was like, ‘We just found our third baseman.’” Costa went on to have a standout season at third base.
The torn labrum was just one of several medical setbacks for Costa, who has been hearing impaired since he was two years old. He also had a tumor – it turned out to be benign – removed from his neck the fall of his junior year. “You see a kid who has been through all that and who’s never given up and continues to try and improve,” McCreary said. “You could never know he’s had those medical issues, and that’s what jumps out the most. So many people will complain about everything, and a lot of people don’t even know he’s had those things. He’s the kind of kid you want to see win because you know what he’s been through. He’s a kid that’s always smiling. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about him. He’s just a super kid all around.”
This fall, Costa will be attending Frederick Community College in Frederick, Md., where he will continue his baseball career and pursue a career in athletic training.
