Becky Ely is the captain of her Council Rock North field hockey team. “She’s definitely the person people look to, and she’s definitely the one that grounds everyone and keeps everyone calm,” coach Heather Whalin said. “She’s very quiet, and she leads by example. She works hard every single day and never lets down. She never gives up.” A three-year varsity starter, Ely – who had 12 goals and 12 assists last year - was asked to move from her position on the forward line to center midfield where she is involved in both the offense and defense and is a key to her team’s transition. “She has the ability to keep the ball on her stick and bulldoze through people,” Whalin said. “She’s not fancy with her stick skills. She just does what we ask her to do, and she does it properly.”
An honors student, Ely is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. She also works with CR North’s adaptive aquatics program which helps special needs children. A gifted vocalist, Ely is a member of her school’s Symphonic Choir as well has her church choir.
Ely – who also plays lacrosse – hopes to continue her hockey career at the collegiate level. She has her sights set on becoming either a math or physics teacher.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Oct. 11)
Menvekah Daramay is a three-year captain of his Upper Moreland soccer team and has started every varsity soccer game since he was a freshman. A first-team all-league selection the past two years and second team selection as a freshman, Daramay has been a star since he broke into the SOL as a freshman striker with 15 goals and 13 assists. “He’s the grease that gets our wheels turning,” coach Jack Knauss said. “He will take on anybody he faces when he has the ball at his feet. (Menvekah) being able to go himself creates so much opportunity for the players around him.”
A native of Guinea, Daramay immigrated to the United States when he was 10 years old as part of a United Nations program. He couldn’t speak English and didn’t know a soul. He was placed with a set of foster parents, George and Grace Haegele, and one day he discovered some soccer balls in the garage. Daramay had played soccer in his native country. “That was the only thing that didn’t change from there to here,” he said.
Daramay has been elected president of his class for the past four years. A member of the National Honor Society and Key Club, he is ranked third in a class of 250. He’s looking into a number of colleges, but his first choice is Penn. He hopes to major in pre-med and possibly one day return to Guinea to help out. “Where I grew up, the medical conditions were very, very poor,” he said. “If I could help out financially or provide assistance as part of my career – that would be my ultimate goal.”
