Rachel Bohr has overcome obstacles to excel for her Wissahickon water polo and swimming teams. As a junior, she missed three weeks of her swim season for surgery to remove kidney stones. In her third meet back, she qualified for districts in the 50 free. “Rachel worked hard, and she got it,” coach Laurie Hug said. “She’s tough. She’s a fighter. I’m proud of her and what she accomplished.” Bohr went on to earn all-league recognition in the 200 medley relay, 50 free, 200 free and 100 free. The ability to overcome obstacles simply comes naturally to her. “If something is in my way of letting me reach my goals, I just find a way around it,” she said. “And if I don’t achieve my goals, at least I worked around my problems. I’m okay with that.”

This year Bohr is a captain of her swimming team, and much like in water polo where Bohr was second on the team with 78 points last season and tallied a team-high 67 goals with 89 points this year, she leads in the pool as well. She has already qualified for districts in the 50 and 100 free. Her work ethic and positive attitude make her an ideal captain. “Rachel’s a fun girl to be around, everybody loves her and the younger girls all look up to her,” Hug said. “She’s a great kid. She’s a great leader in the pool and out of the pool. She’s upbeat, outgoing, motivational.” Bohr’s sights are set on the school record of 25.07 in the 50 free.

An honor roll student, Bohr is leaning toward attending the University of Tampa where she plans to swim and study psychology. But she’s still got some goals to accomplish in high school. “The perfect ending for me would be to swim my last 50 at states,” she said. “That’s what I really want to do.”

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Jan. 4, 2012)

Ian Scullion is a captain and leader of his swim team. The Central Bucks South senior, who measures in at 6-5, was a sprinter-freestyler when he joined the program as a freshman but has developed into a standout distance swimmer.  “We said, ‘Ian, you really have the body type for it, and you have the stroke for it,’” coach Jeff Lake said. “He was reluctant to do the longer distances early on. Once they realize – ‘Hey, I can swim all these yards, and I can actually do it.’ Now he loves it, now he’s looking forward to it. He’s the best leader I have. He leads by example by what he does in the pool.” As a junior, Scullion posted a time of 4:58 in the 500 at the District One AAA meet. “That was probably one of the most exciting moments I have had as a swimmer,” he said. “Going into districts, I knew that all I wanted to do was break five minutes. When I saw it, I was really excited because all the hard work paid off in the end.”

Scullion opened this season by picking up a win in the 1,000 at the CB South Holiday Distance Meet during Christmas break, but he is hardly one-dimensional in the pool. He also swims the 200 IM. “He’s gotten to the point where he came in as a 50 and 100 freestyler, and now he can do all four distances in the freestyle, and he can also do the IM,” Lake said. “He’s worked hard at becoming more well rounded.” Scullion is working toward his goal of breaking the CB South school record of 4:49 in the 500.

Next year Scullion will continue his swimming career at Gettysburg. An honors student, Scullion will major in Management Studies with a minor in economics, working toward his singular goal of one day working in the front office of a professional football team. “He’s a good student,” Lake said. “He was raised well by his parents. He’s a great leader, and he’s a great, great kid.”
