Brenda McDermott is the undisputed floor general of the North Penn Maidens’ basketball squad, and in the spring she will find herself in a similar role as the field general for the Maidens’ defending Continental Conference champion lacrosse team. She is a two-year captain of the lacrosse team. “The thing about Brenda that every day surprises me is that she could probably be an assistant coach,” lacrosse coach Jami Wilus said. “She gets it, she understands what the team needs. She makes our job as coaches a lot easier because of the way she understands how the game should be played and what we expect as a coaching staff.”

Although she is signed, sealed and delivered to play lacrosse at Temple, McDermott, captain of this year’s basketball squad, is committed to her basketball squad as well. “I give her so much credit,” basketball coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “When she first came to North Penn, I heard soccer was her big thing, and she’s gone on to become an outstanding lacrosse player, but she still gives me 100 percent in basketball 100 percent of the time, and I can’t ask for more. It’s not like you say – lacrosse is her main sport, and she just plays basketball. She has a scholarship for lacrosse, but she gives me everything she can on the basketball court.”

McDermott also excels in the classroom. A fixture on the distinguished honor roll, McDermott boasts a 3.9 non-weighted GPA. Her course load this semester includes AP Stat, and she’s carrying an A in that as well. She plans to major in accounting next year at Temple. “She’s a hard working student and a hard working player,” Wilus said. “You ask her to do something, and she’s right there.”

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Feb. 22, 2012)

Kenny Osborne’s name isn’t among the list of leading scorers in the Suburban One League. He’s not the type of player who lives in the spotlight or grabs the headlines. But when it comes to heart and attitude, there are few who can compare with the Harry. S. Truman senior forward. “Kenny’s a special kid,” Truman coach Alan Munford said. “He works extremely hard. He’s a kid that, if he could run through a brick wall for me, he certainly would try. He’s one of the guys on the team who is selfless, who thinks about his team more than himself. I wish I had five of him. He works consistently hard, never complains, always asks what he can do to get better.”

There is nothing Osborne would rather do than play basketball. “I can’t explain it, I just have to play,” he said. “I don’t know what to do with myself if I can’t play basketball.” Osborne’s primary role on the Tigers’ squad was to come off the bench, play solid defense, clean the glass and be a presence in the paint. It’s a role, Munford said, that Osborne accepted and in which he excelled. “If you don’t have those type of kids like Kenny in your program, your program will suffer,” the Tigers’ coach said. “You need selfless kids on your team to promote what you’re preaching as a coach. I don’t think you can win championships without kids like that on your team.” This year, for the first time in Osborne’s high school career, the Tigers qualified for the District One playoffs. “His rebounding ability has catapulted our team this year,” Munford said. “He’s won us a couple of games this year. Without his rebounding, I’m not sure if we’re in the playoffs this year.”

After graduation, Osborne is looking toward college where he plans on trying out for his school’s basketball team. Munford, for one, has no doubt that Osborne will be able to do for that team what he has done for the Tigers over the course of his high school career.
