Kelly Cross has always done things a little differently. On the lacrosse field, the Upper Dublin senior might appear to be laidback. “Kelly comes off at times, if you don’t know her, of almost appearing to be uninterested,” said coach Dee Cross, who also happens to be her mother. “But what she’s doing is, she always sees the second cutter. She’s assessing what’s going on. It used to drive me crazy because I thought she wasn’t focusing, but what I realized was that’s how Kelly settles everything down and then runs the offense.” Kelly has been running it quite well. As a junior, she led the SOL and ranked in the top five in the area in goals (95) and points (149) to help lead Upper Dublin to an American Conference title and a berth in the PIAA State Tournament. She was selected conference player of the year, named to the Eastern Pennsylvania All-Academic Team and was named an All-American.

Cross is looking to once again help lead the Flying Cardinals to lofty heights. “Kelly’s confidence level, especially at the end of last year in the playoffs – she really took it to another level,” Dee said. “I’ve seen that carry over into this year. It’s still a young season, but I think she wants to work hard to get back to that same point as last year. She knows she still has things to work on, and she wants to get better. She’s never satisfied with where she’s at, and that’s very encouraging and contagious when you have a talented group of players.”

Lacrosse is a family affair for Kelly, the third of four sisters to play the sport. She has accepted a lacrosse scholarship to Syracuse University where she will be joining her sister Amy, who is currently a sophomore on the second-ranked Orange women’s lacrosse team. Cross will attend the prestigious Newhouse School of Communications where she plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.

An honors student, Cross boasts a GPA above 4.0, and she is a member of both student government and the National Honor Society.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of April 10, 2012)
Trevor Zwaan has a resume most adults would envy. The Souderton senior is not a superstar. He’s not the top scorer on his lacrosse team. Nor does he perch atop the rankings in his class, but if you look at the myriad of activities he’s involved in, Zwaan is certainly a super contributor, whether it be on the playing field, in the classroom or among the community. Zwaan plays attack for his lacrosse team and can be counted on to contribute. “He’s got really good feet,” coach Todd Pettit said. “He has quick hands, has a quick release and is always working off ball and does a good job in transition. He’s not our best go-to guy but is a good finisher and a good role player in the offensive end.” His best characteristic may be his level-headedness. “He’s very consistent with his mental approach,” Pettit said. “You can count on him to play hard every day.”

Zwaan is also a tri-captain of the team this year. “He’s a quiet kid but a good classic lead-by-example,” Pettit said. “He’s very disciplined, very coachable. He’s good at providing the younger players with a good model of behavior and citizenship.”

Zwaan has had a 4.0 GPA every year in high school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Students Against Violating the Earth. He has also committed countless hours volunteering his time in the community. He is a student volunteer with the Harleysville EMT and has earned his Emergency Medical Technician Certification. He hopes to pursue a career in medicine and will attend either Drexel or Pittsburgh. He plans on continuing his lacrosse career at the club level.
