Zoe Kale never met a challenge she didn’t take. In fact, if there wasn’t a challenge facing her, the Wissahickon senior would create one. Even though she had already committed to Northeastern University as a junior and could have coasted this year, she opted to sign up for AP Economics and English. Likewise, having accepted a full scholarship to play field hockey at Northeastern, she could have blown off lacrosse this spring and taken time to prepare for hockey next year. “To be already committed her senior year and still come back to be captain of the lacrosse team even though she has a scholarship locked up is very admirable,” Wissahickon lacrosse coach Chelsea Rosiek said. On the hockey field, Zale was primarily a midfielder, but she was asked to play defense on her high school team. Not a problem. “She’s a versatile player,” said assistant coach Shelley Meier. “She’d easily adapt to wherever you played her. She’s especially amazing as a defender. She has a lot of patience, and she always takes on challenges on the field.”

Kale, who has been playing hockey since third grade, is immersed in the sport year round. On weekends, she plays Futures and helps coach for the Excalibur Field Hockey Club. A four-year varsity player, Kale was a key member of the Trojans’ district championship squad in 2010. “She’s really a team player,” Meier said. “She’s such a nice and genuine girl. She’s easy to get along with and communicates really well on the field.”

Although lacrosse is her second sport, Kale excels in in that sport as well. “She’s a good scorer and is really strong on defense,” Rosiek said. “We have her play on the best girl on the other team. She gives 100 percent until she can’t run anymore. She’s a pleasure to coach.” As a captain, she leads both by example and vocally.

Kale also excels academically and is a member of the National Honor Society. One of the things she liked about Northeastern is its co-op program. She is undecided on a major.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of April 17, 2012)

Paul Gosselin received the call to move up to the varsity baseball team late in his freshman year. The Pennsbury senior has never left the lineup since then. He shrugged off a knee injury that forced him to miss half of his sophomore season, and he has gone on to become a key member of the Falcons’ squad. A senior captain, Gosselin has proven to be a threat on the mound, at the plate and at third base. He possesses the remarkable ability to avoid the highs and lows that often affect ballplayers. “Paul’s a little bit laidback, maybe a little more than I would like,” Pennsbury coach Joe Pesci said. “But he goes out there, and he gets the job done on the field. He has that attitude, that drive, that competitive edge.”

Gosselin recently completed a week that saw him go 5-for-9 from the plate with a pair of doubles, three round-trippers and eight RBIs. “Paul had a great week,” Pesci said. “That was huge for us because we aren’t scoring a lot of runs. With his bat, he was the one that was producing the most, and then he got us the win on the mound too.” As far as Gosselin is concerned, he’s simply doing his job to help out the team. “I feel like everyone expects me to come through with the big hit, or pitching, or making the big play on the field,” he said. “Everyone has confidence in me, which gives me more confidence in myself. I expect to go out there and do my job.”

According to Pesci, Gosselin has excelled in his role of captain. “You have some captains who fire the guys up, get loud and intense, where Paul’s the kind who would lead by his play on the field,” Pesci said. “I’ve noticed him starting to get on guys if they make a mental mistake or if they’re not hustling. You see him developing that leadership.”

Gosselin plans to attend college with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.
