Jenna Johns – Nova Southeastern University (Swimming)
Major: Marine Biology
Final list of colleges: Nova Southeastern, University of Tampa, Florida Atlantic
Reasons for choosing Nova Southeastern University: “I’m going to be majoring in marine biology, so that was the main deciding factor because most schools don’t have it. So it was either go cold up north or go warm, and their program is awesome. I just felt really comfortable. The atmosphere was great, the coaches were awesome – they just got a new coaching staff, which was a plus. Everybody always says – as soon as you walk on campus, you’ll know. I was like, ‘No way,’ but as soon as I walked on campus, I was like, ‘This is it.’”
What was the progression that led you to continuing your swimming career at the collegiate level? “It all started freshman year because I was friends with a lot of upperclassmen, so they were all going through the process. Come around sophomore year was when I e-mailed schools based on my major. I would look to see if it had my major and then I would look to see if it had a swim team.”
Coach Pat Redican says: “She’s fantastic. She’s been a leader on the team since she was a freshman. Without being a bully, without being obnoxious with the older leaders, she just found her niche. The captains and the seniors were always comfortable with the way she operated with the team. She’s just a leader, and her success comes from – she’s talented, but there’s nobody that works harder in the pool than she does. She’s driven, but if you talked to her, it’s always, ‘What can I do for the team?’ She’s just a great, great kid, and I’m so happy for her.”
