District Duals Round 1-Recap

By Glenn Kaiser

The first round of the District One Class AAA Team Championship is in the books, and three SOL teams survived the madness.  The overall #1 seed Quakertown took care of business at home, downing the PAC’s Methacton Warriors 41-22 to easily advance to the quarterfinals of this 16-team field.  They will face another PAC team in Spring-Ford, the #8 seed who squeaked past Souderton 33-30 this past Thursday.

The other two teams to advance to Upper Dublin H.S. Feb. 1, 2025, for a chance at D1 Team title are sister schools from Council Rock, the #3 CR South Golden Hawks and #4 CR North Indians.  South needed a full lineup to take down #14 Owen J Roberts 37-27.  Meanwhile, North rolled over the Central League’s Haverford Fords (#13) 47-22 as expected.  #6 Pennsbury was edged by #11 Garnet Valley (Central) 35-30.  The Jaquars were the lowest seeded team to advance, as they have done before in these duals.  #12 Hatboro-Horsham was trying to be that team but came up short out in Oxford, losing 39-30 to the #5 seeded Hornets.

Pennridge (#10) was eliminated by the #7 Sun Valley Vanguards 37-24 on the road.  Neshaminy, the lowest seeded team from the SOL at #15, was crushed by Boyertown 57-8, the Bears look headed for a showdown with CR South in the semifinals in the lower half of the bracket, if they can win over the Vanguards in the quarters.  CR North will be challenged by Oxford, which is solid from top to bottom but will struggle with the star-power of the Indians, especially in the lower middle-weights.

Many of the matches were tight with several teams winning duals with seven wins to six wins in the wins breakdown.  S-F, Oxford, Garnet and CRS did so respectfully over Souderton, H-H, Pennsbury and OJR.  As predicted, this is still a wide-open dual tournament with any remaining teams capable of winning the title.  Here are my predictions:

Quarterfinals
Q-town over Spring-Ford in a fun one.
CRN over Oxford in a barnburner.
CRS over Garnet Valley handily.
Boyertown over Sun Valley in a war.

Semfinals
CR North in an upset over Q-town
CR South over Boyertown in a knock-down drag them out delight, setting the stage for a Council Rock battle of the ages.

Finals
CR South over CR North in an epic final.  Boyertown over Quakertown for 3rd place.

Sun Valley is the wild card in the remaining bracket and could very well sneak in to the PIAA portion leading up to the state bracket that will be wrestled in Altoona at the Altoona HS Field House Saturday Feb. 9, 2025.  The prelims and first-round matches will be wrestled Tuesday, Feb. 4.  Twenty teams will be in the AAA field, D1 #1 will be home on Tuesday versus D3 #2 and our #2 will travel to D12 #1.  D1 #3 face D12 #2 and D1 #4 against D11 #1.  Details on sites will be determined after all Districts have their qualifying teams decided.  The top eight teams surviving the early rounds will head up to Altoona for the finals Friday Feb. 7 and 8
