WRESTLING NOTEBOOK:  AROUND THE SOL

By Glenn Kaiser

Springfield Township downed Hatboro-Horsham, rather handily 43-24, in an out of conference dual on Thursday improving to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the Freedom Conference.  Springfield, who competes in AA for the post-season, will square off against Upper Moreland (18-4) for the league title on 2/2/22.  Springfield will not compete in the District One AA Team Championship, as Faith Christian will represent D1 versus the District 12 champ Saturday 2/5/22 at Upper Dublin.

The Spartans ruled in their own gym at the Spartan Clash as they went 5-0, and Upper Moreland matched their record over the weekend finishing a perfect 5-0 as well.  Springfield was never really tested in this field.  Upper Moreland knocked off Father Judge 39-36 to finish the day.

There was plenty of action over this past weekend, as both Quakertown and Central Bucks East hosted dual tourneys.  The Quakertown Duals featured some outstanding teams from thru-out the state.  The Panthers ruled in their own gym, winning the event with a perfect 5-0 performance as they gear up for the D1 Dual Championship this coming week.  They downed always tough Delaware Valley 48-18 and destroyed the Valley’s Bethlehem Liberty 60-18 for two solid wins.  They shut-out East Stroudsburg South 78-0 as well, showing just how dominant they are.  Quakertown is the favorite and #1 seed in D1, but look out for #2 Council Rock South to avenge their early season loss to the Panthers in the D1 finals if it’s meant to be.

William Tennent despite a 4-12 team record, is led by senior Nolan Citaldi, who is 17-4 on the season at 172-pounds.

CB East hosted their long running annual dual tourney on Saturday.  Several SOL teams competed, as Hatboro-Horsham avenged a league loss to Wissahickon 40-36 with their full line-up in the fifth place bout.  The host Patriots downed Abington (6-6) in the finals by one-point 34-33, to win the tourney.  Despite handing the Ghosts two forfeits, East rallied in the upper weights closing out the dual with six straight victories prior to the forfeits.  The Collins brothers both recorded falls to seal the deal at 215 and 285-pounds, respectively.

Congrats to #1 Quakertown, #2 CR South, #5 Pennridge, #10 Pennsbury, #11 CB East and #13 Souderton for making the D1 Team Championship!

Souderton at the Coal Cracker (Lehighton H.S.):

Souderton Boys and Girls teams competed at Lehighton High School at the Coal Cracker Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.  The boys team finished in 11th place (124.5-points) in the field 45 schools.  Lackawana Trail won the tourney with 190.5-points.  Top finishers include:

113 - Charlie Arobone placed 3rd
126 - AJ Stayton placed 7th
132 - Tyler Geiger placed 5th
138 - Erick Dominguez placed 2nd

Of note: Most brackets included state-ranked wrestlers... Dominguez's bracket included the #3 and #4 AA ranked kids (per PA Power Wrestling).  He lost 3-1 in the championship final at 138-pounds to the #3 ranked wrestler, Meadowbrook Christian’s Cade Wirnsberger.

On the girls’ side, Trinity Monaghan went 3-0 and won the tournament.  Kayla Husti-Luca and Gisele Ramirez both went 2-1 losing in the Championship Finals.  Kayla lost to Haylie Jaffe from Kennett in District 1 (Of Note Haylie is a USA Wrestling National Champion and Pan American Team Member for USA Womens Wrestling).
