Wrestling: SOL Teams Flex Muscles in Opening Round of District 1 Team Championships

SOL TEAMS FLEX THEIR MUSCLES IN FIRST ROUND OF 2022 DISTRICT ONE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Buckingham, PA-As expected, #1 seed Quakertown and #2 Council Rock South rolled in their opening round duals as the tournament kicked-off at Central Bucks East High School Thursday night.  Quakertown continues to dominate in dual meets, as they easily dismissed Downingtown West 49-14, and Council Rock South appears to be peaking as a dual team, as the Golden Hawks destroyed Owen J Roberts 51-14.  The Golden Hawks win in the first round followed a 63-0 shutout of Pennsbury Wednesday night.  Coincidentally, Quakertown blanked Hatboro-Horsham 69-0 Wednesday as well.

Number nine seed Pennsbury was also a winner in the first round, as they traveled to Oxford High School, the other site for the first round, and edged a rugged Kennent squad 33-30.  Pennsbury advances to the Elite 8 to be wrestled at Upper Dublin Friday and Saturday a week from today.  They will take on #2 CR South there.  Thus, take note of the separation of teams between the #1 and #2 seeds in this team championship event.

The biggest match-up the first round was at CB East (#11), as the host Patriots, won on criteria 31-30 after they battled to a 30-30 tie after regulation against the #6 seed Boyertown.  The Collins brothers completed the comeback for the Patriots, as they both recorded falls at the end of the contested bouts.  Quinn Collins pinned Boyertown’s Michael Kelleher in 2:22 of the second period at 215-pounds, and Patriot Joe Collins needed only 45-seconds to deck Matthew Cavalari to knot things up in the team scoring with Boyertown receiving a forfeit at 106-pounds.  CB East survived the two gifted forfeits at 113 (match started here) and 106-pounds by recording three falls, a tech-fall and major decision.  Max Bean sparked the Patriots with his decking of Derek Renninger at 126, Mason Stein tech-falled Ryder Gheris 15-love and Nils Updale major decisioned Boyertown’s Nicholas Montayne 11-3.

However, Luke Wilson’s 2-1 win over Boyertown’s Dominic Sheridan, a huge swing match in the dual, may have been the difference in this wild one.  Nonetheless, it came down to an individual match unsportsmanlike call on Boyertown’s Chance Babb that cost Boyertown the loss.  Babb was frustrated in his match with Maximus Gordon at 160-pounds, despite winning by major decision 13-5.  He was chirping to the official during the match, and was finally penalized the point, which ultimately was Boyertown’s demise and pushed East ahead for the win with the additional team point added at the end of the dual meet.

Number five seed Pennridge was dominant in their disposal of a somewhat depleted (due to injuries) Perkomen Valley (#12) team 52-18.  The Rams continue to roll, and will challenge #4 Spring-Ford in the quarterfinals.  Five of the six teams represented by the SOL advanced, thus dominating the first round of these duals, Souderton was the only team that lost as they were out-gunned by Spring-Ford 53-20.

The Ches-Mont pushed one team thru in #3 seed West Chester Henderson, who surprisingly needed a victory in the final match of the night over the Central League’s Strath Haven (#14) to advance with the 30-27 win.  The Central League will be represented by #8 Garnet Valley and the Pioneer Athletic Conference with just Spring-Ford advancing.  The absence of other PAC teams in the Elite 8 is a bit shocking this season.

Notes:  Central Bucks West senior Carl DiGiorgio notched his 100th career win Wednesday night with his pin over Pennridge’s Logan Domurad in the Bucks 60-3 loss to the Rams.  DiGiorgio is currently ranked #2 in the 3A PA Power Rankings.
