Player of the Year
Kate Connolly, Souderton
To understand what the senior guard/forward meant to her Souderton team, all you need to know are two numbers – 51 and 8. The season before the Drexel recruit transferred, the group won eight total games. As for the two years following the move? The squad captured 51 combined victories, including the program’s first ever Suburban One League title and a District 1 Class 6A championship this March.
Her impact could be felt on the floor whether or not she had the hot shooting hand that evening, as some of her biggest plays were on the defensive end. Her versatility could often be summed up in the way she filled up a stat sheet, as Connolly averaged over 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists a contest. Even further, her selflessness allowed room for her teammates to grow into their roles, while her poise provided valuable leadership.
Some games she took over with her shooting, while others she dominated by racking up the blocks or showcasing her ability on the boards. Perhaps her best moment in a Souderton uniform came on the biggest stage, as she hit a three with an opponent’s hand in her face to keep her squad alive in the district championship. The clutch shot wasn’t surprising from a player like her, in fact, it was expected. That’s just how good she was when she was wearing No. 32.
First Team
Maura Hendrixson, Cardinal O’Hara
A starter since her freshman campaign, the senior guard demonstrated great growth over the course of four seasons, starting her career as a sharp shooter and ending it as a consistent all-around player and calming presence on the floor. The Drexel recruit is still a sharp shooter, that’s for sure, as she drained 65 three-pointers this year, but her development in more than 100 starts – especially on the defensive end – is what sticks out. This season she averaged 14 points a game as the Lions successfully defended their Catholic League championship.
Jabria Ingram, Neumann-Goretti
Not many would have put the Hartford recruit down as the pre-season favorite to earn Most Valuable Player honors in the Catholic League. Nor would they have guessed the Saints would go 12-0 in the PCL regular season and repeat as PIAA Class 3A state champions. All of those things happened, in large part due to the play of the senior point guard leading them all. Ingram was exactly what every team wants in a floor general – at times she took over the game and at other moments she let her teammates shine. Her decision-making abilities were key down the stretch for N-G and helped some of her less experienced teammates improve greatly as the season wore on.
Katie May, Archbishop Wood
Not many players meant more to their respective teams than the senior guard for the Vikings. Averaging over 27 minutes a game – seven more than the second highest total on the team – the Northeastern recruit did a little bit of everything for the PIAA Class 5A runner-up. Her veteran experience and poise was key to another late postseason run for Wood, as May facilitated the offense, while also proved to be a pivotal cog on the always stifling Vikings defense. Her numbers may not be flashy, as she scored nine points, added five assists, grabbed 4 rebounds and 2 steals a game, but her presence could be felt on every single possession.
Taylor O’Brien, Plymouth Whitemarsh
The senior guard followed a sensational, star-making turn of a junior season with another remarkable performance for her final year in a Colonials uniform. With an offensive prowess second to none, the Bucknell recruit averaged an explosive 22.8 points per game over the course of a 23-6 season, scoring more than 20 points 20 times. Her season high was 36-points, while her low was 10, meaning she registered double-digits in every contest. O’Brien’s athleticism, length, and speed made her a match-up problem for every opponent, as she was able to use those attributes at both ends of the floor. She finishes her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2040 points and a 50-9 run in her junior and senior seasons.
