On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, Abington senior Sam Nemec was recognized for committing to continue his ice hockey career at Penn State Harrisburg.

Reasons for choosing Penn State Harrisburg: “I have the best opportunity to play ice hockey there, and I feel like I can come out with a Penn State degree, so it’s definitely beneficial, and it’s also close to home.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in ice hockey at the collegiate level? “Last year my junior year was almost my coming out year. When I first started playing hockey six years ago, I always knew I wanted to play in college, and Penn State Harrisburg seemed like the best fit, and I’ve always wanted to wear a Penn State Jersey.
Coach Ken Brzozowski says: “We’ve been blessed at Abington the past couple of years having a number of players having the opportunity to continue to play college hockey. We had one player go off to juniors who has now circulated back to a very high level D1 club team. This is just an extension of our program being able to get some access to continue their hockey careers.
“Sam has worked hard, and he has been very patient in waiting for this opportunity to be ‘the guy,’ so to speak, the number one net minder for Abington. Last year, we had a very special season, and he was a junior and had to share the net with a senior (Ben Panella). I know at the end of the year, there were some hard decisions I had to make as a coach when we got into the playoffs and Flyers Cup who was going to get that opportunity, and I had to go with Ben – one, because he was a senior, and I just felt at the moment his game was just more on point.
“I know Sam took that to heart and really worked hard over the offseason and engineered his game so that he would be in that position this year. Right now, things are trending that way. He’s been an absolute star for us, and he’s a huge part of our success this year.”
