Bensalem Trio to Play Collegiate Softball

Bensalem seniors Megan Klein, Brianna Ryan and Lina Sponheimer were recognized for committing to continue their softball careers at the collegiate level.

Megan Klein – Siena College (Softball)
Major:
Finance/Business
Reasons for choosing Siena: “They were interested in me, and the coaches were very nice.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “I was playing at a high level at the age of 13 on the same 18U gold team I’m on now. So, I had colleges watching me since then, and I always wanted to go.”
Coach Erin Smith says: “Megan’s speed and talent make her a generational player. You’re lucky to coach someone with her skill set. She is a true triple threat offensively - she can bunt, slap and hit for power and has unnatural speed. Defensively, she is the kid all over the field willing to dive for any ball. But more impressive is Megan’s drive, her ability to not let anything get in her way, which she showed us all this last season when facing adversity. Meg’s name is all over Bensalem’s record books, and I’m sure four years from now it’ll be all over Siena’s too.”

Brianna Ryan – Gwynedd Mercy University (Softball)
Major:
Sports Management
Final list of colleges: Gwynedd Mercy, Immaculata, Arcadia
Reasons for choosing Gwynedd Mercy: “I was looking at a bunch of schools, but I loved the campus and the environment at Gwynedd. I ended up doing an overnight there, and I knew immediately after that Gwynedd is where I wanted to go. I also got an offer to play softball there, so it really sold me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “Bri is a kid who is selfless. Never once did she complain no matter what circumstances were thrown at her. She did whatever we asked her to do without hesitation -pitching, outfield, pinch hits. She has a thirst for knowledge, and I can’t wait to see her improve her game at Gwynedd next season.”

Angelina Sponheimer – Alvernia University (Softball)
Major:
Business/Finance
Final list of colleges: Alvernia, Stockton, York, Wilkes
Reasons for choosing Alvernia: “Alvernia felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus. I loved it right away and knew it was the perfect fit for me as a student and an athlete. From the start, the coaches and players at Alvernia were extremely welcoming, and I am really looking forward to spending my next four years there.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “I have been playing softball since I was seven years old, and I fell in love with the game. A few years later, when I joined the Lady Bombers when I was in middle school, I would be glued to the TV whenever college softball came on. It was then that I knew playing in college was something I would really love to do. During my freshman year in high school, I started the college recruiting process and thankfully was able to make my dreams come true by continuing my academic and athletic career at Alvernia University.”
Coach Erin Smith says:  “Lina is truly a one-of-a-kind player - she is what I refer to as a blue collar player. Nobody will outwork her. She just puts her head down and grinds. She quietly captured a bunch of milestones at Bensalem (over 100 hits, over 100 RBIs, career RBI leader, tied for fourth most hits). She had a knack for being productive. A hit, a sac fly, a walk, whatever you needed - she just found a way to get it done. It wasn’t just offensively. Lina has been a four-year starter at first base and was constantly making diving catches, snagging line drives, picking balls out of the dirt. I have no doubt that she will continue to make an impact at Alvernia the next four years.”
