Kyle Haughton – Alfred State College (Football & Baseball)
Major: Criminal Justice
Reasons for choosing Alfred State: “I felt it was the best fit for me both academically and athletically. It also has a strong criminal justice program which will set me up for my future.”
What was the progression that led you to playing baseball and football at the collegiate level? “My whole life I always wanted to play at the collegiate level. Every essay or paper I’ve written since elementary school always has my top goal as playing college baseball or football.
“The recruiting process was very difficult because I’ve never seen anything like it. You have different ‘scouts’ to help that cost hundreds of dollars, and then there are camps and things like that. I went to a few camps that were in my budget, but at the end of the day realized sending my own film and contacting coaches myself was best. It also gave me an opportunity to communicate with different coaching staffs and see what their program was about and how I would fit in.”
Baseball coach Harry Daut says: “Kyle transferred from Archbishop Wood, and he was ineligible last year. He’s 6-3, he’s a third baseman, he’s a hitter, and he really was going to be the surprise in the Suburban One League. He was going to be my four hitter this year. Out of everybody, I feel most disappointed for him because he’s just a special kid, and he was just ready. I think he played one varsity game against Council Rock South last year. He’s big and he’s strong, and he was really going to be the surprise of the league.”
Football coach Ed Cubbage says: “Kyle came to us from Wood and didn’t even play football at Wood. He was a kid who just wanted to contribute in any way possible – he didn’t care. He wanted to help out. Because he never played football before and because he’s a pretty intelligent kid, he was so coachable. It was great. He had no bad habits, he had a great work ethic, and he took everything you said to him to heart, and he tried to do it to the best of his ability. That’s across the board to us as a coaching staff. He was a joy to coach.
“Kyle played wide receiver for us, and he played some defensive back for us as well. He’s got a frame where a couple years in the weight room – he could really develop, put on some muscle. You can see that in him, and he has a work ethic, so you know he’s going to put the work into it. I got to know him in the classroom as well, and he’s a very good student also. He’ll do well.”
