Bensalem's Richard Bordone to Play Football & Baseball at Alfred State

“It’s weird how it all worked out – Alfred reached out to Richard, and he wanted to expand his horizon and look outside the usual places our kids go,” Bensalem football coach Ed Cubbage said. “He went there and enjoyed his visit. He liked that he would be able to play both sports. They asked him if he knew anyone that he would recommend, and he threw out Kyle’s name. Kyle also enjoyed it, and Kyle is best friends with Dawson (Fontaine), so there you go. I’ve never had a kid go to Alfred before, but I think it’s pretty neat that it’s three kids going. I’m pretty excited about it.”

Major:  Business Management

Reasons for choosing Alfred State:  “The reason I selected Alfred was to play football and baseball there, and it’s a nice campus.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in football and baseball at the collegiate level?  “I’ve been playing football and baseball since I was six, and all my coaches and my dad pushed me to be a better player and person.

“It’s been a dream to play both sports in college since I started playing. The process started when I played AAU baseball last year in the summer.”

Baseball coach Harry Daut says:  “He was a three-year varsity starter. He was an All-Suburban kid last year, and I’m sure he would have been this year. Rich is such a tough kid, he plays hard, and he would run through a wall for you. He’s that type of kid – he’s all-out.  He played center field and hit .360 for us last year. He’s just a tremendous, tremendous outfielder – he just gets after it, and he was going to be my number three hitter in the lineup. He works hard, he pays attention to every pitch. His toughness is really what sets him apart.”

Football coach Ed Cubbage says:  “Richard was a three-year starter for us. Over the three years, he played several positions for us – we moved him around wherever we needed him. His senior year we needed a quarterback, and he played quarterback for us. It’s probably not his natural position, but he did it. He’s tough as nails – he’s just a tough, hard-nosed kid. Playing quarterback, he took a lot of hits, and on defense, he gave a lot of hits. He played safety and cornerback for us. As a junior, we even had him play some outside linebacker for us.

“We played Frankford in the first game of the year last year. It was Richard’s first game starting at quarterback. It was real late in the game, and we’re down. We needed to score a touchdown to win. There might have been about two minutes left, and he got hit hard and got hurt. We were talking to him – are you okay? He literally said, ‘I just want to win this game so bad.’ That was his mindset. His mindset was – personal safety aside, I just want to win this game. He’s a tough as nails kid.”
