Jackson Butkus – The Citadel (Track & Field)
Major: Criminal Justice with a minor in Biology
Final list of colleges: Citadel, U.S. Naval Academy, Old Dominion
Reasons for choosing The Citadel: “Military came first because that’s what I want to do. I tried the Naval Academy, but I didn’t get a nomination. My second choice was The Citadel. It wasn’t until I went down there and was looking at the athletics that I found out they had a really good javelin program. I went down there and hung out with the track team, talked to the coach. I fell in love with it, and I want to keep doing that. I’m getting the best of both worlds.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level? “I actually didn’t start throwing until my junior year. I really liked it last year, and this year when I started to really learn how to throw (the javelin) and got competitive - that’s when I knew I really wanted to keep doing this because I know I can progress and get better.
“I liked throwing the javelin more than I liked the other two sports (football and swimming). Throwing came more naturally to me. All the other sports I’ve done actually trained me for throwing. I fell in love with it. There’s a new found passion for throwing, so I figured why not do something like that that I’m really good at it and love to do.”
Coach Greg Wetzel says: “Jackson is a very good swimmer and has qualified for districts in multiple events in swimming. He qualified for districts in the javelin for us this year, and the javelin is especially difficult to qualify in. I think there are only 14 boys in the whole district that qualified in the javelin, and there are 70 schools in District One AAA, so to only have 14 is really a tough standard to hit, and he was one of those top 14 guys. It was pretty neat for us to have him compete for us in the district meet. He’s worked really hard, so it was neat to see him be able to sign on at The Citadel.”
