Vince Careghini – Shippensburg University (Baseball)
Major: Exercise Science
Final list of colleges: Shippensburg, IUP, Lehigh, Monmouth
Reasons for choosing Shippensburg: “I visited once, and I like the coach – he’s a great guy, and that was a good impression for me. I love the school and the field and everything about it. I went to watch the practice and met some of the players. They all seemed like great guys, so it was kind of an easy decision.”
What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level? “In my ninth grade year, I had an older brother, and he had friends that were doing it, so I was interested in it. I was doing some showcases when I was younger. After my junior year for football, I started thinking about doing both, but I thought it would be too hard to do both at once, so I decided to focus on baseball after my senior football season this year.”
Coach Kyle Dennis says: “Vince is a two-year starter. He was in left field for us last year, and as a junior, he stole 19-20 bases. This year he did everything that we needed out of him as a leadoff hitter. He didn’t steal as many bases, but he didn’t have to because the guys behind him were driving him in. He just covers so much ground in our outfield, and being wide open in our outfield like it is in center, you need someone who can run. He was excellent in all facets of the game. He’s what you want in a leadoff hitter – he’s patient, he has a good bat, he can work deep counts, he doesn’t mind taking a strike and hitting with two strikes. It was just a lot of fun watching him play this year. He was a big part of everything.”
