Bridget Birkhead – Mount St. Mary’s University (Basketball)
Major: Elementary Education
Final list of colleges: The Mount, Holy Family, University of Scranton, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross
Reasons for choosing The Mount: “It was the first school I fell in love with. I visited and I just felt it was right. The other schools I visited I hadn’t felt that - I really liked them, but I just didn’t get that feeling. When I was at the Mount, it felt right, and it was a really good feeling.
“I was always looking for not the biggest school but not a small school, and I think that’s perfect to describe The Mount. I loved the coaches, and I really liked the girls. It’s a beautiful campus, and I just think it fits me perfectly, and I can do great there.”
What was the progression that led you to playing basketball at the collegiate level? “I remember I was in fourth grade, and I watched the NCAA men’s tournament, and I asked my dad, ‘Can we watch the girls?’ Texas A&M won, and for about five years, I wanted to go to Texas A&M. Once I hit eighth and ninth grade, I realized the reality that I’m not going to be starting at UConn anytime soon, but I can thrive somewhere else. I just love basketball, so I wanted to continue with that through college.
“I would like to thank my family for getting me to where I am, all my coaches I’ve had, especially coach Potash and my AAU coaches, and just everyone who’s been there for me along the way.”
Coach Liz Potash says: “Bridget has been a four-year varsity player, a three-year starter for us. Coming into the program, we knew there was a lot of potential. She had good fundamentals, and the foundation was there, but she has just really elevated her game over the last couple of years and has become a real versatile player. We’re real proud of her.
“She’s always been a good offensive threat, but she’s elevated her game to where she can be a good defensive stopper. She’s done a nice job rebounding. Offensively, she’s got a real good shot, and she can finish real nicely around the basket. That’s a big strength of hers.”
