Christian Wolf – Messiah College (Volleyball)
Major: Applied Health Sciences with a focus on Physical Therapy
Final list of colleges: Messiah, Arcadia, Misericordia, Penn State
Reasons for choosing Messiah: “Mainly volleyball – I knew I wanted to play volleyball in college, and I really liked the team atmosphere as well as the campus feel. Everyone on campus is really awesome, really kind. It just felt like the place for me. As soon as I set foot on campus, it felt right.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in volleyball at the collegiate level? “It wasn’t an apparent goal up until my freshman year of high school. I had been playing volleyball since I was 10, and I just loved the sport. Freshman year I went and tried out for a USA volleyball training camp run by college coaches from around the country. You have to try out, and then you make a team. Then you go and spend a week at training camp. They have college coaches from all over, and the coach of the men’s national team was there. Once I made that, I realized I had a chance to pursue it and play in college. From there on out, I started the recruiting processing.”
Coach Rob Minschwaner says: “Christian is such a great kid. I don’t know where to start. My first year at East his brother Jeff was a junior on the team. It’s a volleyball family. He had two older brothers – Jeff and Paul, and they both played volleyball. I wasn’t at East for Paul, but I coached Jeff his last two years, and he was a captain. I’ve known Christian because he’s been hanging out in the gym all these years. He started playing club as a young guy. He’s an interesting character because he’s the first one to do anything that you need. As a freshman, he was a starting middle hitter for us. As a sophomore, he was a starting middle hitter, and last year as a junior, he was a starting middle hitter, and he was really good. He was second team All-SOL and second team All-District.
“This year with Dylan (Colbert) graduating last year, we’ve got Jacob (LaBouliere), and Christian is moving outside. I said, ‘You could be, without a doubt, the number one middle in the area, but he said, ‘Where do you need me to play?’ I said, ‘We could use you outside, but I feel bad putting you out of position where you don’t get the recognition.’ He doesn’t care. He just wants to make the team great. His whole family is great. They’ve been supportive the whole time. During all these years coaching, I haven’t had that many four-year starters, but he’s done it, and he’s been outstanding. Playing on the club teams all these years, he’s been phenomenal doing that. He actually sang the National Anthem at Nationals as a 14-year-old kid. He’s got a great work ethic. He’s never, ever been out of control, he’s never lost his composure that I’ve seen ever. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t play with passion. He’s a very passionate kid, he’s one of the louder kids on the court, and he’s always positive. There’s never any controversy with the kid. He’s like the coach’s dream. You couldn’t do better than have a kid like that. He’s one of my all-time favorite kids that I’ve ever coached. He’s an outstanding kid.”
