Jackie Devaney – Adrian College (Synchronized Skating)
Major: Communications
Final list of colleges: Adrian, Marist, Miami University
Reasons for choosing Adrian: “There was something about Adrian’s team ethics that I was always really drawn to. I’ve been watching all the high level teams – collegiate and senior teams – at nationals every year, and Adrian has just gotten big in the picture. I went to the camp last summer, and I learned I really liked what the team was about. They’re hard workers and they’re all team players. I tried out - it was a weekend process with three days skating all day, and that’s when I realized – this is where I belong.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in synchronized swimming at the collegiate level? “It wasn’t a thought immediately. I think I realized I was coming up to the point where I was graduating from the team, and I wasn’t ready to be done yet. So then I started doing the big college search for teams, but I’ve always been watching Adrian as a fan.”
Coach Geri Lynch-Tomich says: “Jackie is dedicated, resilient, thoughtful, dependable, committed, positive, focused, passionate and willing to go the extra mile (figuratively and literally). She (and her parents before she got her license) drove hours and hours from Pennsylvania to New Jersey at least three times per week for three years and sometimes to arrive at the rink at 5:30 a.m. That demonstrates how much she cared about her team and also her extraordinary character. Never an excuse. That’s dedication to say the least. Jackie has everything needed to be a most valuable member of any team she was on.”
