Lauren Griffith – Widener University (Swimming)

Major:  Biology on a pre-med track

Final list of colleges:  Widener, Ursinus, University of Vermont, Holy Cross

“When I stepped on campus at Widener, (it) just had this wedding dress feeling to it. I visited so many schools, but when I went there, it just seemed like the right fit. It was more of a city type setting, which I liked. It was a smaller school, so everyone kind of knew each other, which was really nice.
“When I went for my overnight, and I met with the swim coach and the team, it felt like the right fit. The girls got along great, the team seemed to be very close-knit and seemed to be very focused, so I fell in love with it.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in swimming at the collegiate level?  “Up until last year, I wanted to play soccer in college, and I realized last March (2014) when I went to states, I really became truly passionate about swimming. It kind of became more of a part of me. All the people on the team – I bonded with them and was so close with them, and the sport – I fell in love with it.”

Coach Tom Kane says:  “I’m very proud of Lauren for choosing Widener. I think she’s going to be a mainstay on their squad. I think she has a great future ahead of her in college swimming.
“Lauren started as a freshman not being maybe one of the top kids, but she just worked and worked and worked and wanted to be a state level swimmer. In the end, her junior and senior years she achieved that goal. She qualified for districts in multiple events. She was very faithful at practice mornings and afternoons, and it’s a testimony to setting a goal and being an extremely hard worker and coachable kid that helped her get to the level she wanted to achieve.
“We had captains this year that were outstanding, and Lauren was right there part of that group. She contributed to team spirit, logistics, banquet organization, just getting everybody together all year long. I don’t think we ever had a happier group of kids, and that’s part of her legacy. It’s going to be a tough act to follow.”
