On Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2020, Central Bucks East senior Andrew Whinney was recognized for committing to continue his baseball career at the College of the Holy Cross.
Andrew Whinney – College of the Holy Cross (Baseball)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Holy Cross, Harvard, Bucknell, Columbia, NJIT, Lafayette
Reasons for choosing Holy Cross: “A combination of the coaching staff, the facilities and just the liberal arts education – the teaching style of the school and the size of the school.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level: “Baseball has always been my only serious sport, but I started to look ahead to college around late freshman early sophomore year when I started to develop quicker. From then on, I sort of devoted myself to it, I worked really hard at it, and I did what I needed to get here.”
Coach Kyle Dennis says: “He’s a brilliant kid, and he’s a phenomenal leader. Just from a technical perspective – we’ve had some really talented catchers. He is by far the best receiving catcher I have had in my time here. He just absolutely can receive anything. He showed as a sophomore the ability to handle Nick Bitsko throwing 95 miles an hour, and we were honestly concerned – would we have someone that could handle that level of velocity and spin, and Andrew handled it unbelievably well. He’s worked incredibly hard at his craft and just becoming a great receiver. His technical ability to receive pitches regardless of spin and velocity is the best I’ve seen, and we’ve had some really good catchers.”
