Tyler Young – Lehigh University (Baseball)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Lehigh, Holy Cross, Columbia, Lafayette, Bucknell
Reasons for choosing Lehigh: “I really felt like I fit in at Lehigh. On my official visit, it really felt like home. All the players were really welcoming. I think it’s a great atmosphere and great academics combined with a great baseball program.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “Ever since I was five years old, I have wanted to play baseball. My dad’s been a baseball coach his whole life, and I’ve been around baseball. I love basketball, but I knew I would have a better future with my genetics in baseball.”
Baseball coach Kyle Dennis says: “Tyler works incredibly hard. He’s put a lot of time in on his own over the past couple of years. He’s been in our program for four years. This is his third year on the varsity. He transformed himself in the last couple of years through lifting on his own. He’s gotten bigger and stronger – he’s added 15-20 pounds of muscle, and it’s really translated to his game. He’s always worked hard, and now he’s throwing harder, hitting harder, and he’s just done a great job on his own.
“This will be Tyler’s third year as our starting shortstop. He won the job as a sophomore, and he’s never let go. He’s always done a great job. Lehigh is a great fit for him. He’s very bright academically. It’s going to challenge him on the field, it’s going to challenge him academically. It’s a beautiful place, it’s close – his parents can watch him play. It’s a great program, a great field. The coach has been there a long time and knows what he’s doing. We’re really excited for him.”
Basketball coach Erik Henrysen says: “Tyler is one of our hardest workers on the basketball court, and he works just as hard with baseball, and he deserves all the accolades. We’re going to rely on him a lot – he’ll be a senior and playing point guard for us. He really gets us into our offense. He’s going to be a huge part of what we do this year.”
