On Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, CB South seniors Adam Collachi, Carter Hallgren, Garrett MacClay, Ryan Schaub & Tom Wood were recognized for committing to continue their football careers at the collegiate level.
Aaron Collachi – Millersville University (Football)
Major: Sports Administration with a coaching minor
Final list of colleges: Millersville, Widener
Reasons for choosing Millersville: “The team aspect and what coach (J.C.) Morgan is going to do with the team, the way we’re trending, and the attitude basically.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “From day one, I wanted to play in college. From my dad being a college player and my brother who’s going to West Chester being a football player – it just runs in the family.”
Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Aaron Collachi has been a presence at South for the last three years. On both sides of the football, he was a dominant force. If he were just a one-way player, I think he would be considered for some all-state honors, but the fact that we needed him to play on both sides – he has an engine, he is weirdly athletic in a pretty big frame, so he only knows how to play the game one way, and it’s full speed. He had a great career for us.”
About Aaron:
Favorite food: Penne a la vodka
Favorite TV show: The Office
Favorite music: Country
Carter Hallgren – Ursinus College (Football)
Major: Business or Communications
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, Widener, Lycoming
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “It was just the right spot for me. I liked the school, the football program, and I liked the area.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “It started my junior year in high school when I really decided I wanted to play. I just couldn’t see myself not playing for the next four years.”
Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Carter Hallgren – in a short season – did unbelievable things. He has an unbelievably strong arm, and he has an understanding of where to go with the football. There were many times where we just put the game on his back and said – ‘We need you to make plays.’ He’s a gamer and a very good athlete and just put outstanding numbers up for us his senior year.”
About Carter:
Favorite food: Steak
Favorite movie: The Roadhouse
Favorite music: Rap
Garrett MacClay – Lebanon Valley College (Football)
Major: Physical Therapy
Final list of colleges: Lebanon Valley, Misericordia, Ursinus
Reasons for choosing Lebanon Valley: “Honestly, it was just the coaches. They were so welcoming and friendly. Also, the PT program at Lebanon Valley is so awesome. It’s just an amazing program, and it blew everything else out of the water.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “I always knew I wanted to play a sport in college. Growing up, I was always a soccer player, and it wasn’t until junior year that I started football. At the end of the junior season, I was coming into my own. I worked hard in the offseason just to get better at what I was doing, getting more accurate on kicks and more distance. By the end of senior year, I was getting a few looks from schools, and I realized that’s what I wanted to do in college.”
Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Garrett MacClay came to us as a junior. He’s on the soccer team, and he said, ‘I want to kick for you,’ and it was one of the greatest things ever. In high school football when you can pin an offense deep on a kickoff inside of their 10-yard line and make them go 80-90 yards, more often than not, good things are going to happen for you. He has such a lively left leg, and he was consistently able to do that and was a legitimate offensive weapon for us in that way and was first team all-league for a reason.”
About Garrett:
Favorite food: Mac ‘n Cheese
Favorite TV show: The Office
Favorite music: Pop & Hip Hop
Ryan Schaub – Misericordia University (Football)
Major: Business/Business Administration
Final list of colleges: Misericordia, Fairleigh Dickinson, Western New England, Ursinus, Millersville and a few PSAC schools
Reasons for choosing Misericordia: “Honestly, the relationship with the coaches that I built and just the time they put into me and the effort to try and get me to come up there to their program. I’m just excited to continue my next four years.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “Ever since I was a kid playing football, it’s been my dream to play in college, but it became a reality this year when I had a breakout season and I realized it was really possible.”
Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Ryan Schaub really came on his senior year for us and was a force to the point where teams would largely game plan to deny him the ability to get the ball in his hands because with the ball in his hands he was definitely a lethal weapon and legitimately had an unbelievable season. He put up great numbers in a pretty short season.”
About Ryan:
Favorite food: Chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A
Favorite TV show: Friends
Favorite music: Mac Miller
Tom Wood – Ursinus College (Football/Track & Field)
Major: Environmental Science
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, Allegheny, Misericordia
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “It came down to Ursinus and Allegheny, but Ursinus is a lot closer. Allegheny is a six-hour drive. At Ursinus, I have a great connection with the coaches, and I have a great education program. I just think it was the right choice for me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football and track and field at the collegiate level? “I’ve been committed to football and track and field for years and years. It would tear me apart to try and decide. When the throwing coach from Ursinus originally reached out to me, he got me in contact with the football coach.”
Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Tom Wood was the clear leader of our offensive line. He’s a student of the game, he’s highly cerebral, and he really understands how to play the game and obsesses over the technique that would allow him to play at a high level. He had an outstanding two years for us at South.”
About Tom:
Favorite food: Chicken Parmesan
Favorite movie: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Favorite TV show: Impractical Jokers
Favorite music: Classic Rock
