CB South's Gibson & Smith Commit to Play Collegiate Football

On Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, Central Bucks South seniors Ryan Gibson and Sean Smith were recognized for committing to continue their football careers at the collegiate level. Check back to view photos of the event.

Ryan Gibson – Grove City College (Football)

Major:  Biology/Education

Final list of colleges:  Grove City, Messiah

Reasons for choosing Grove City:  “I wasn’t looking at other schools for football. When I went on a tour of Grove City, I could imagine myself being there. I loved the coaches – they’re awesome, and the football team is cool. I just really liked it.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level?  “In middle school and early high school - freshman and sophomore year, I thought I wanted to play in college. I had a rough junior year because I grew a lot and I was growing into my body, but senior year I knew I probably wanted to play in college.”

Coach Tom Hetrick says:  “Ryan Gibson helped anchor our offensive line. He was part of our offensive line the last two seasons. He’s probably one of the strongest kids on our team, and he’s what I call a very heavy blocker. When he gets into somebody, it’s hard to get out of what he’s doing to you. He is very cerebral. He has what we call ‘want to’ – his want and need to get as good as he can possibly get at this sport. To be able to coach somebody like that who is just an open book and a sponge trying to absorb everything he can while playing the sport to get as good as he can at the sport is a pretty fun thing. I really enjoyed having a chance to coach him.”

Sean Smith – East Stroudsburg University (Football)

Major:  Sports Management

Final list of colleges:  East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Millersville

Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg:  “The coaches played a big part in it because it felt like one big family, and I wanted to be a part of that. On my visit, I felt comfortable with the campus. They had my major, and I just felt good about their football team. I feel like they’re starting to be one of the better teams in the PSAC conference.

What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level?  “I have always wanted to play college football, so there was always desire from a young age to play college football. I feel like it’s every football player’s dream to play college football and keep playing football as long as possible in general. My recruiting process started heating up summer before senior year. I started going to camps and stuff like that.”

Coach Tom Hetrick says: “Sean Smith had an unbelievable senior season. With the ball in his hands, he was a difference maker. He put up numbers that this school hasn’t seen in forever and numbers that competed with some of the best numbers in the state – 60-plus receptions, 15 touchdown catches and almost 1,200 yards receiving. By midway through the season, we were just devising ways to get him the ball because in high school football – get the playmaker the football and expect them to make plays, and he did throughout the whole season. He had an unbelievable season, and I’m pretty excited to see what he’s going to do up at East Stroudsburg.”
