On Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, Central Bucks South senior Lizzie Shirley was recognized for committing to continue her volleyball career at Jefferson University. Check back for photos of the event.
Lizzie Shirley – Jefferson University (Volleyball)
Major: Pre-Pharmacy
Final list of colleges: Jefferson, University of Rhode Island
Reasons for choosing Jefferson: “I wasn’t really looking at any other schools for volleyball, but I was looking at Rhode Island for academics.
“I really, really liked (Jefferson). When I went for my visit and saw how all the girls interacted with each other and how the whole entire team
worked, it was something I felt I couldn’t pass up.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in volleyball at the collegiate level? “I knew I loved the sport so much. I didn’t ever want to give it up, but I didn’t really consider playing in college until the end of last year.”
Coach Kurt Godfrey says: “Lizzie is one of the best things that’s happened to the program in a really long time. Volleyball IQ-wise, she’s incredibly smart. She’s had an opportunity to play and start for the better part of four years – she was varsity for four years and started for three. She just has a really, really good head for the game. Having a setter that is that consistent and is able to run an offense and understand it as well as she does is invaluable. Having that consistency for our hitters – knowing where that set’s going to be and knowing she can put that set where they want it helps our offense tremendously. She was elected captain as a junior and was a returning captain as a senior, but she’s been a leader for a very long time before she was elected captain. We’re excited for the next chapter in her career.”
