On Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, Central Bucks South senior Sophia Wasyliw was recognized for committing to continue her field hockey career at La Salle University.
Sophia Wasyliw – La Salle University (Field Hockey)
Major: Possibly Education
Final list of colleges: La Salle, Widener, Lock Haven, Temple
Reasons for choosing La Salle: “I really loved the atmosphere of the school. I’ve grown up going to the city, and I knew I definitely wanted to be down there. I loved the city, and since I started talking to the coaches, they were all so welcoming. The team is an amazing group of girls – I’m really excited to get down there. Also, the academics are great, and I really love the campus.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in field hockey at the collegiate level? “I was a gymnast my whole life, and right before going into middle school, I decided to quit gymnastics. I really wanted to do cheerleading, and my mom was like, ‘You just quit gymnastics. Maybe do something different than that.’ I said, - ‘Okay, maybe.’ My two best friends I met in middle school were playing field hockey, and they were like, ‘Play with us,’ so I decided to give it a try. I started playing in seventh grade, but I didn’t start club until my freshman year.”
Coach Pat Toner says: “She’s the kind of kid you’d want as a daughter. She’s just a sweetheart of a kid from a great family. She has her head on straight. She has great rapport with administrators, with the kids on the team. She’s a great captain. I can’t say enough good things about who she is as a person. When you have somebody like that on your team that’s also talented, you’re really lucky. She’s fast, she has good stickwork, she works as hard as any kid I’ve ever had, and she just has the ability to put her head down and control the field. We’re going to miss her.”
