Christian Bobowicz – Northeastern University (Track)

Major:  Computer Science & Engineering

Final list of colleges:  Northeastern, Columbia, Bucknell

Reasons for choosing Northeastern:  “The first time I went to Northeastern on my unofficial it felt great – I could just see myself there, and then I got to meet the team, and I really liked how the team received me. A lot of the would-be freshmen who I met on my official who were there with me – I started contacting them, and they were all going. (I liked) everything about it. They also offered a double major with computer science and engineering, which is what I had always planned to do. They offered that where other places hadn’t, and with the co-op, all of that together really just made it a very confident decision.
“I enjoyed my visits to Columbia and Bucknell as well, but none of them made the lasting impression that Northeastern did where afterwards I was thinking, ‘I could definitely see myself there.’”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about it once I got in my sophomore year and I got really competitive in high school. A lot of my friends became track guys, and I became basically obsessed with the sport and the professional athletes and talking with (my friends) about it. I realized this was a massive part of my life, and with the competitiveness I was able to achieve in my sophomore year, I figured I could go a long way if I kept working at it. I liked the structure and I liked the lifestyle of being a student-athlete, and I saw myself being able to best do that with track.”

Coach Greg Wetzel says:  “Christian competes with a ferocity that’s really unique, and that’s part of why he’s so wildly successful. He brings that same ferocity to practice but on a smaller scale, but he has the ability to elevate when the bright lights are on, and that’s something that’s pretty special about him. He’s also willing to do anything – he’d go through a wall if you asked him to where a lot of times we’re trying to weigh the benefits versus the risks of training when he’s got a sore this or that because he works so hard. One of the main things I’m doing is making sure he doesn’t get himself hurt because of the way that he brings such intensity to practice on a daily basis. That’s different than what a lot of other kids do who are working hard but who aren’t pushing to that extra level every day. Getting enough rest to recover and be better is an important piece of the puzzle, and that’s the main thing we have to make sure that he does. He’s a great competitor, and he trains really hard and is a team player. All the things you could say about a wonderful kid could be said about him and then more. He’s really smart which has opened the doors to Northeastern. He’s not just getting into a great school because he’s a great athlete, he’s also a great student who belongs there.”
