Klaus Mangeot  - High Point University (Track & Cross Country)

Major: International Business with a minor in French

Final list of colleges: High Point, Appalachian State

Reasons for choosing High Point:  “When I went there for my athletic visit, I got to talk to the coach, I got to meet the team. They gave me a tour before I had my official tour, and just the overall feel of the school and how everybody was so welcoming just really drove me to it and made me overall choose High Point over other schools.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and cross country at the collegiate level?  “I started running in seventh grade, and ever since I started running, I’ve wanted to compete at the collegiate level. A lot of it was how I was raised. We all have a good distance runner’s mentality in our family, which really helped me out when it comes to training and racing. I feel like that was a big driving force right there.”

Coach John Mahoney says:  “Klaus has improved so much over four years. I remember when he joined the team as a freshman. I think he was not 100 percent sure he was in the right place, but he absolutely was. Now he’s taken his talents to the next level. He’s really been a phenomenal leader for us. He has a great work ethic. All the right qualities you need to have to be successful to compete in college he’s got. He’s had a tough last two years of high school with all the challenges COVID brought. He never complained about any of them, made the best of the situation he’s been dealt and has had a great high school career. Hopefully, we’ll top it off in the next couple of months.

“You have to be dedicated to be a distance runner. You have to have that special quality, you have to be able to endure that self-inflicted torture as a distance runner. You can’t just solely rely on talent. It can only get you so far in anything, especially in our sport. The success he’s had – yes, he’s talented, but it’s a lot of the hard work and all the miles he’s put in.”
