On Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, Central Bucks West seniors Gene McGough and Danny Miller were recognized for committing to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level.
Gene McGough – Radford University (Baseball)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Radford, Penn, La Salle, George Washington
Reasons for choosing Radford: “My decision to go to Radford was mostly baseball. There’s a lot of potential for growth there. I’ll have a role, and it’s really good baseball. It’s south too, so it’s a bit warmer. It’s preferable to play there, and it’s a beautiful area.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “When I was younger, I always thought baseball was one of those things that would disappear after high school. Little did I realize there are opportunities and there are stages to keep going.
“I was prepped for college when I was in ninth grade – it was always the goal for my teams to get recruited. It was always in the back of my mind. I never really had one school that I was like, ‘Oh, I have to go to that one.’ When the time came and I started throwing hard, schools came, and it just developed.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: “No one takes the art of pitching more seriously than Gene. He’s a real goofy guy, but it belies a real seriousness about the game. When he’s in game mode, he is locked in. He thinks constantly about what he’s throwing and how he’s throwing it, and he works incredibly hard in the offseason. He’s so good for the other kids to see because obviously he’s a very talented kid, but it didn’t just happen. He’s had to work at all the stuff he’s done. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores who are pretty talented, and it’s good for them to see that so is this guy, but he’s working at it every single day, 365 days a year basically.
“As a dugout presence, he’s not a guy that just shows up on his day to pitch and phones it in every other day. He’s as invested in our team’s success as anybody. He’s such a good guy.”

Favorite movie: The Shining
Favorite music: Rock
Danny Miller – Clarion University (Baseball)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Clarion, Penn State-Harrisburg, Susquehanna, Gettysburg
Reasons for choosing Clarion: “I just really liked Clarion’s business program, which is something I want to pursue. It was a beautiful campus, and I loved the area. I really liked the baseball coach – he’s a new coach, and he really seemed to click with me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I played basketball and baseball, and it came down to what I could see myself going further in and what I would like more as I went to college. I feel like that would be baseball. I love baseball and I love pitching. It was a hard decision, but I chose baseball.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: “I didn’t know a lot about Dan going into the year last year. I knew him vaguely, but I want my guys playing other sports, and Dan has a pretty big role on the basketball team. We talked early in the year, and I said, ‘I don’t want to see you until you’re done with coach Adam Sherman. Take his season and go play great basketball for him and then come play great baseball for me.’ At the beginning of the year, we had a couple of bullpens to see him, but the first real extended chance I got to see him was against East. I think it was our second game, and we were having one of those high school innings where we were completely imploding. We put Dan in and not only did he shut down the inning but he carried us the rest of the way. It was like, ‘Great, now we know we have a pitcher here.’
“He’s great on the mound – he’s 6-4 or 6-5, and he has this big glove that covers all of his face except his eyes. As a mound presence, he looks like a big tall dude, and he’s just completely unflappable. As a pitcher, that’s exactly what you want in a guy. He’s another one of our pitcher-only guys – all of them chart, all of them keep track of each other’s success, all of them talk to each other. As a staff, you have a handful of guys who are talented but also want to see each other do well. There’s not a lot of jockeying to see who’s number. Instead, they’re a bunch of guys who are all pulling the rope the same direction.”
