Ryan Kelly – Florida Southern College (Lacrosse)
Major: Nursing
Reasons for choosing Florida Southern: “There were three main things I was looking for in a school. Number one would be a good nursing school, two – competitive lacrosse, and three – I wanted to be in school in Florida. Florida Southern checked all the boxes. I fit in so well with the team, and it’s just such a great atmosphere. I have family that’s close by within two hours. It was just the perfect fit. The nursing school is excellent. The lacrosse team is very competitive – they won a national championship in 2016.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I didn’t really know I wanted to play until last year. My coach encouraged me to try out for the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament, and then I just started emailing coaches and reaching out to schools. I ended up going to Florida Southern’s recruiting camp because they saw my highlight film, and they were interested. I ended up loving the school, loving the coach and committing there.”
Coach Nicole Fisher says: “It’s really disappointing to have Ryan’s senior season and the rest of the seniors’ last season cut short. I was definitely very much excited to have this senior class. They are all very talented athletes. Ryan, in particular, was a clear standout from the beginning. Her knowledge of defense is unparalleled for her age level. At the high school level, not many athletes have that much field vision on defense and natural instincts, and more so than that, she’s unbelievably driven. She’s always giving 100 percent in any of our conditioning and in any of our drill work, so she’s very hardworking and itching to grow and itching to do more.
“In our practices leading up to her official visit to see her coaches and have a practice with them, she said, ‘Coach Fisher, I really want to make sure I’m doing everything I can before I got down to play with them. I’m so excited.’ We went over some things for that. She’s really smart, and you can tell that she cares. She’s also an absolute leader. As a senior, she came to every single one of our optional offseason practices without fail. She was definitely a leader to her younger teammates both on the field and off the field. She has that personality that younger players are looking at her as an example. She’s always kind and respectful to the coaching staff and all of the players. She’s the player that every coach wants on their team.”
