On Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, Central Bucks West senior Cayden Wertz was recognized for continuing his baseball career at Ursinus College.
Cayden Wertz – Ursinus College (Baseball)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, Lycoming
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “I thought Ursinus was a better fit. I took a tour of the campus, and I just liked it a lot better. I really liked all the coaches.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “From middle school, I really liked it, and I wanted to pursue it as long as I could.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: "Cayden is one of the most unassuming players you'll ever meet. He's a quieter guy, one who doesn't pound his chest. He has great stuff on the mound, but he's not demonstrative after a strikeout or a big inning. He just shows up, does his job, and roots on his teammates. Outside of our activities, he works incredibly hard to maintain his skill level.
“That sounds like a bland description of him, but it's actually a critical asset. Like most teams, we emphasize with our guys that in this sport, you can't get too high or too low or else the game will eat you alive mentally. Cayden gives us a perfect example of how we need our guys to handle themselves emotionally in a game - whatever the situation, however heavy the pressure gets, he stays even.
“As a pitcher, possessing that capacity is pretty special. And it's a visual reminder for our younger guys that that's the kind of demeanor we need to have on the mound. For Cayden, that's just his day-to-day personality, so I don't think he realizes just how important and unique it is, and how indispensable it makes him to our program."
